E da un po’ che non ricevo piu vostre nuove.  Spero che non vi sara nessuna cattiva causa.  Ti ho mandato un bell’album di Chicago.  Vi sono delle vere vedute dell’Esposizione.  Non regarlo via.  Vi e pure un giornale in cui si parla dell’Esposizione di San Francisco.  Tienlo.

Finzi mi ha scritto che ha messo su un piccolo opificio a Milano, un qualcosa di semi-industriale e semi-scientifico.  Mi dice che dovre associarmi a lui, ma non lo faro per molte ragioni e tra le altre perche non ho voglia di lasciare Ivrea, sia che essa sia per esser assunta alla dignita (per cosi dire) di provincia, sia che essa sia lasciata all’umile stato di circondario.  Tanti saluti allo zio.  Ricordami ad Ep e Tom ed ai conoscienti.

It’s been awhile since I’ve received something new from you.  I hope nothing bad has happened to you.  I sent you a beautiful album of Chicago.  There are actual views of the Exposition.  Don’t give it away.  I’ve also sent a newspaper that talks about the Exposition in San Francisco.  Hold on to it.  Finzi wrote to me that he opened a small factory in Milan, something semi-industrial, semi-scientific.  He tells me that I should join him, but I won’t for many reasons one of which is because I don’t want to leave Ivrea, whether it’s to be taken to the more dignified province or to leave the more humble province.  Best regards to uncle.  Remember me with Ep and Tom and our friends.

All’universita abbiamo ora una sequela di conferenze tenute dall’ ex presidente degli U.S., Harrison.  Ti mando un giornale in cui si parla di tali conferenze.  Non distruggerlo.

Il presidente Harrison e molto brutto, somiglia assai ad una scimmia, e gobbo e non mi pare sia neppure un grande oratore.  Le conferenze sono, come d’ordinario, tenute nella cappella ove si tengono anche i sermoni domenicali.  Questa gente e molto religiosa e fanno entrare Dio dappertutto.  Pero hanno riguardo a cio delle vedute molto liberali, tanto che i sermoni domenicali trattano della religione in modo molto generale.  Questi sermoni sono tenuti per turno da ministri di vari culti, molte volte sono protestanti (metodisti, evangelisti, episcopali, luterani, etc. etc.), alle volte cattolici; due settimane fa venne a farci una predica un rabbino di San Francisco e un mese fa l’oratore fu un sacerdote buddista.  Come vedi, la scelta si fa con criteri abbastanza liberali ed i giovani ed i professori accorrono con lo stesso ardore a sentire il cattolico, il protestante, o l’oebreo.

At the university we’ve got a series of converences going on right now that are being held by ex-US president Harrison.  I’m sending a journal that discusses these conferences.  Don’t throw them out.

President Harrison is really very ugly, he looks quite like a monkey and a hunchback, he is fat and he doesn’t even seem to me like a good orator.  Like usual the conferences are held in the chapel where they have the Sunday sermons.  The people here are very religious and include God everywhere.  But, their views are very liberal, so much so that even the Sunday services only talk about religion in a very general way.  Various traditions take turns holding the sermons, many times they are protestants (methodists, evangelists, episcopals, lutherans, etc etc), sometimes catholics, two weeks ago a rabbi came from San Francisco, and a month ago the sermon was done by a buddhist priest.  You can see the choice is fairly liberal and the students and professors flock with the same ardor to hear the catholic, the protestant and or the jew.

Carissima mamma,

Ho da annunciarti una cosa che fara molto piacere allo zio a cui ti prego communicarla, ed e che ho deciso di riprender presto il mio viaggio di ritorno.  L’inverno e passato e con esso la principale ragione della mia permanenza in California.  Versi i primi d’aprile lascero Palo Alto.  Staro alcuni giorni a San Francisco (4-5) e poi andro a Los Angeles, vicino alla frontiera messicana; poscia me ne ritornero in su e a piccole tappe penso di esser a St. Louis per la fine di aprile.  Tu continua fino a nuovo avviso a spedire le lettere a Palo Alto.  Non mandarmi piu invece la “Critica Sociale.”

I have an announcement to make that will make uncle very happy to whom I’d ask you to tell this happy news, and it’s that I’ve decided to start my return voyage soon.  The winter has passed and that was the main reason I was staying in California.  Close to the first of April I’ll leave Palo Alto.  I’ll stay a couple of days in San Francisco (4-5) and then I’ll go to Los Angeles, near the Mexican frontier; afterward I’ll make my way in little steps and plan to be in St. Lous near the end of April.  Until further notice you can continue to send letters to Palo Alto.  But don’t send the “Social Critique” anymore.

Mi rincresce del matrimonio di S. con la R. perche ho paura faranno della fame, e poi S. e un gran buon ragazzo, ma non credo di possa dir lo stesso della sua futura.  Del resto se a lor piace noi non ce ne dobbiamo intrigare.

Qui nulla di nuovo.  Un giorno o l’altro andro a San Francisco a vedere la Midwinter Fair e allora ti protro scrivere una lettera piu interessante di questa.

I regret the marriage of S to R, because I fear they will go hungry, and while S is a great guy, I don’t think I could say the same of his future wife.  Besides, if they please, we don’t need any extra intrigue.

Nothing new here.  One day or another I’ll go to San Francisco to see the Midwinter Fair and then I’ll be able to write you a more interesting letter.

Credo che presto col ritornare della primavera lascero la California, tanto piu che vedo che stante lo stato disperato delle nostre finanze e megli mi metta presto a fare qualcosa.  Del resto sono felicisimo della mia permanenza in America perche ho imparare molte cose che non si possono imparare sui libri.

I think I’m ready to return in the spring, I’ll leave California, the more so because I can see the desperate state of our finances and I think it’s better for me to get started quickly with doing something.  Overall I’m very happy with my stay in America, because I learned lots of things that you can’t learn from books.

Finalmente dopo tre settimane di attesa ho ricevuto la tua lunga e particolareggiata lettera di cui ti ringrazio.  Ho sentito con dispiacere la notizia della morte di Rossi.  Ho anche ricevuto una partecipazione, ma non ho mandato biglietti di condoglianza perche sarebbero arrivati troppo tardi.  Per la stessa ragione non ho risposto ai biglietti degli zii di Modena ed ora non mando biglietti ai Liuzzi per la morte del padre, che ho visto annunziata sul “Corriere”.  Hai fatto bene ad imprestare il vestito di paggio a Pesaudo.  Almeno e servito a qualche cosa.

Finally after three weeks of waiting, I received your long and detailed letter, for which I thank you.  I was sorry to hear the news of Rossi’s death.  I also received a [participation?], but I didn’t mail a condolence card because it would have arrived too late.  For the same reason I didn’t respond to the cards from my uncles in Modena and I’m not sending a card to Luizzi for the death of his father, which I saw announced in the “Corriere”.  You’ve done well to lend the [pageboy dress?] to Pesaudo.  At least it will be used for something.

Ciabot was the Olivetti summer house in Monte Navale, that Camillo later gave to his sister Emma. As of the publishing of these letters in 1968 it is owned by the Marsellis.

I wrote a long letter to Dino; did he receive it?  Tell him to write me.   I realize I’ve smeared the paper, with an ink stain and my writing.  Forgive me for not rewriting my spiel.

Non sono stato ancora a veder la Midwinter Fair di San Francisco perche e ancora allo stato di gestazione, comeche sia gia stata inaugurata ed i giornali suonino la grancassa a tutto andare.  Del resto sara in brutto ed in piccolo quello che in belle ed in grande era la Esposizione di Chicago.

Ricevo settimanalmente i giornali che Carlo mi manda ed il “Corriere”, e siccome arrivano tutti insieme ne faccio un’indigestione.

Qui continua a far tre giorni di bel tempo ed uno di pioggia e non si sente un differenza notevole di temperatura.  Del resto mi dicono che anche di piena estate vi sono pochi gradi di piu che di inverno.

Probabilmente fra pochi mesi lascero la California, cosa che da una parte mi rincresce perche sarei certo in tre anni di farmi una buona posizione in quanto mi hanno parlato in aria di un laboratorio meccanico che avrebber intenzione di metter su fra due anni se vi saranno fondi, di cui mi affiderebbero forse la direzione; ma credo che sia meglio che me ne ritorni a tentare la fortuna in Italia, tanto piu che sarebbe una cosa assai incerta perche i fondi ci sono (un qualche cosa come un duecento dei nostri milioni), ma le rendite sono ancora per qualche anno ipotecate.

I haven’t yet seen San Francisco’s Midwinter Fair because it’s still in a state of gestation, even though it’s already started and the newspapers are sounding the bass drum everywhere.  Overall, it will be ugly and small, compared to what was beautiful and huge at the Exposition in Chicago.

Weekly I receive the papers that Carlo sends me, and the “Corriere”, and since they arrive together they give me indigestion.

We are getting three days of good weather and one of rain and you don’t feel much notable difference in temperature.  Overall, I’d say that even in the height of summer, it’s only a few degrees higher than in winter.

Probably, I’ll leave California in a few months, which, on the one hand I’m sorry for because I’m sure that in three years I could create a good position in something like a laboratory mechanic which they’ve talked to me about and have intentions of putting together in about two years if there are funds, which I trust may be the case; but I think it would better for me to return to try my luck in Italy, the more so as it is uncertain because the funds are there (something like two hundred million to us) but the revenues are still a few years mortgaged.

It always feels like a breath of fresh air to start a new letter. This one is dated February 18, 1894. In the letter, Camillo mentions Carnevale, which is quite a big deal in Ivrea. Mi ricordo sempre la definizione dello Statuto del nostro caporle:  Lo Statuto e quella cose per cui si fa la festa tutti gli anni.  E infatti l’unica cosa a cui puo servire visto che quando piace alla canaglia di Roma esso puo esser abrogato.  Io non so se abbian fatto piu opera rivoluzionaria i siciliani bruciando i casotti del dazio o quei di Roma abolendo lo Statuto.  Ce ne ricorderemo nel giorno del giudizio che io credo e spero molto vicino.

I always remember our corporal’s definition of the Statute:  The Constitution is that thing for which we have the festivals every year.  In fact, the only way the Rogue of Rome will be happy is when it is repealed.  I don’t know who has done more revolutionary work, the Sicilians burning the huts of duty or those abolishing the Rome Statute.  We’ll remember this on the day of judgement which I think will be very soon.

Questa volta la mia lettera non sara cosi lunga come l’ultima mia ne cosi noiosa.  Che brutte notizie dall’Italia!  Adesso non mi potrai piu parlare delle guarantigie accordate dallo Statuto ai liberi cittadini del liberissimo regno d’Italia, quando basta un decreto reale per metter un’intera provincia in potere della soldatesca, abolendo tutte quelle poche guarentigie che lo Statuto accorda.

This time my letter won’t be as long as the last one, but it might be as boring.  What bad news from Italy!  Now I can’t talk about the guarantees according to the Statute for the free citizens of the freest kingdom of Italy,  when all it takes is a decree to put an entire province under the power of the military, abolishing all of the few guarantees that the Statute accords.

Ho ricevuto una lunga lettera da Dino a cui ho risposto con una 13 o 14 pagine, pero mi sono dimenticato di fargli le mie condoglianze per la morte della nonna.

Maria, now that you are becoming a young lady, I hope you have dropped the habit of wimpering for every little thing.  Tell Umberto I will write him a letter one of these days.

I received a long letter from Dino to which I replied with 13 or 14 pages, but I forgot to offer my condolences upon the death of his grandmother.

Tu mi dici che hai impiegato due ore per scrivere quel tuo squarcio, e un po molto, ma pare che stassera abbia anch’io le stesse disposizioni letterarie, perche non so andare avanti.  Di’ a Sergio che chi troppo studiare matto diventa e che i 10 scuola sono una bella cosa, ma che non bisogno darci troppa importanza; ad Umberto puoi dire la seconda parte del proverbio che, visto che lo studio non gli piaci, deve studiare assai per potersene al piu presto.

You told me you have two hours to write your (letter?), that’s kind of a lot, but it seems that tonight I have the same letter-writing disposition, because I’m not going out.  Tell Sergio that those who study too much go crazy, and that 10’s in school are a beautiful thing, but not to give them too much importance; tell Umberto the second part of the proverb that those who don’t enjoy their studies, need to study hard enough to liberate themselves as soon as possible.

Qui non si gela … qui non vi e esercito, qui non vi sono sollevazioni della fame e represioni tiranniche.  Quasi Quasi sarei tentato di persuadere voi ad emigrare in America, ma invece fa due o tre mesi ripigliero la mi via verso casa con l’intenzione pero di ritornarmene in America se, come e probabile, gli affari mi andassero male.

Nothing freezes here, there are no uprisings because of hunger or tyranny.   I was almost tempted a few months ago to persuade you to immigrate to America, but instead in two or three months I’ll turn my road toward home with the intention of returning here to America if, in the likely case, that my affairs/plans go badly.

PS  I think the Ring Series semi-fiasco in Milan had to do with not just the poor execution and staging, but also the non existent theatrical taste of the Milanese.
