Come ti ho detto, Chicago non gode troppo delle mie simpatie senza porterne presciare una ragione, cosicche non fu con molto dispiacere che ieri l’altro sera presi un express alla volta di Minneapolis. Il viaggio fu felicissimo e relativamente poco costoso (9 dollari con lo sleeping car) e ieri a mezzogiorno mi trovai nella metropoli del Minnesota. Fui da bel principio fortunato nell’hotel perche ne trovai uno ben situato ed ove mi diedero una buona camera per 2 dollari e messo al giorno, comprendendo in questo prezzo tutti i tre pasti abbondanti e buoni, mentre a Chicago per 2 dollari avevo solamente una stanza.

Like I told you, Chicago does not enjoy my sympathies too much without stating a reason [I think there is some idiom here I’m not getting], so there wasn’t too much disappointment that I got the express, on time, to Minneapolis. The trip was very pleasant and relatively inexpensive (9 dollars for a sleeping car), and yesterday, midday I found myself in the metropolis of Minnesota. I was lucky from the beginning with the hotel because I found a nice situation. They gave me a good room for 2 dollars a day, which includes three big, good meals, whereas in Chicago for two dollars a day only got me a room.

In molte altre biblioteche ciascun cittadino ha il idritto di portarsi a casa un libro e tenersel per due settimane senza che cio dia luogo ad inconvenienti … Ho paura che da noi di una biblioteca cosi regolata non rimarrebbero in pochi giorni neppure gli scaffali. Del resto di queste impressioni di viaggio, che formano la parte piu utile pel viaggiatore, avremo tempo di parlare a voce. Invece sara meglio che ti paril del viaggio in stesso. Dopo che il prof. Ferraris mi lascio io rimasi ancora una settimana a Chicago a veder l’Espozizione, che e come ti ho detto enorme e degna di esser vista, e a veder un poco la citta, che ha un’area grande come quella di Londra e forse piu, ma che e soltanto parzialmente costruita.

In many other libraries, all citizens have the right to take a book and hold on to it for two weeks--and this doesn’t cause any incidents! I’m afraid that it we had a library with these rules even the shelves wouldn’t remain after a few days. We’ll have time to disucss the rest of my impressions from the trip, by voice (in person?). It will be better if I tell you these things face to face. After Professor Ferraris left me, I stayed an extra week in Chicago to see the Exposition, which I told you was enormous and was worthy of being seen, and to see the city, which is big like London, maybe bigger, but its only partially constructed.

Il ho assistito ad un incendio in un edificio a 8 piani costruito quasi totalmente con legno. Le fiame eran divampate sul tetto ed eran minacciose. Tre pompe accorsero immediatamente ed in poco temp l’incendio fu domato; ma la poplazione si stette calmissima e le persone stesse che abitavano la casa non pensarono ad abbondonarla ne a trasportare vie oggetti fiduciosi ed a ragione, nell’opera dei pompiere e nella solvibilita delle societa di assicurazioni.

Del resto questi americani sono ammirevoli in molte altre cose: per esmpio in molte delle numerosissime biblioteche aprete al pubblico nelle varie citta, i libri ed i giornali sono nel modo piu assoluto in balia del pubblico ed ognuno si prende il volume che abbisogna e dopo se lo rimette a posto senza controllo e senza che percio mai nessun libro venga rubato o sciupato.

I assisted with a fire on the 8th floor of a building made almost completely of wood. The flames erupted and were menacing. Three pumps immediately saw the problem and very quickly put the fire out, but the people were extremely calm, and the actual people who lived in the house never thought of abandoning it nor thought to take out precious objects and they were right, in america they can trust the work of firemen and the solvency of insurance companies.

The Americans are admirable in lots of other ways too; for example many of the numerous libraries are open to the public in many cities, the books and newspapers are absolutely available publicly and anyone who needs a book takes it and then they return it without inspection and therefore without anything being damaged or stolen.

I've enjoyed translating this section. I feel like it reveals the development of a way of thinking in which Camillo believes that if you empower people, take care of them and trust them, they will do the right thing. Interesting.
