And so I come to the last bit of translation for 2012.  I'm looking forward to continuing in 2013.  Can't wait to share pictures of my new Lettera 22 (originally from Quincy Illinois...family members will understand the wonderfully random connection) and report back from The Denver Art Museum, which I am going to check out an exhibit called Olivetti:  Innovation and Identity.

Un’altra cosa in cui ti vorrei dare dei consigli e sui libri di lettura piacevole.  Anzitutto credo che e molto meglio passare le ore di ricreazione giuocando (sp) e saltando, che non leggendo racconti e novelle, tanto piu che non vi e quasi alcun libro per fanciulli che sia degno di esser letto.  Invece vi sono tanti bei libri di storia naturale e di racconti di viaggi (sp) che credi ti interesserebbero e che son certo piu utili di tutti le novelle di Madame de Segur prese insieme.  Anzi scrivero a nonna perche mandi a Toriuno alcuni bei libri illustrati di storia naturale, che io leggevo quando non ero molto piu vecchio di quello che tu sei ora e che mi piacevano (sp)
assai.  Mi raccomando di tener li con gran cura.  Ad ogni modo se tal generi di libri ti piace pensa che alla tua eta quando non si studia e molto meglio giocare che leggere.

Another thing about which I’d like to advise you is reading for pleasure.  First, I think it’s better to use your recreational time to play or to jump, rather than reading stories and novels too much, because there are barely any books meant for children worth reading.  Instead there are many nice books about natural history and travel stories which I think would be interesting to you, and are definitely more useful than all of the Madame de Segur novels put together.  Rather, write to grandmother, because she has a few beautiful illustrated books about natural history that I ready when I was not much older than you and which I really enjoyed.  She can send them to Turin.  I highly recommend you take good care of them.  However, even if you like these books, at your age, I think it’s better when you’re not studying to play rather than to read.

Qualche volta invece ti potra esser utile confrontare il tuo lavoro, dopo aver fatto, con quello di qualche compagno.  Ma anche di questo non bisogna abusare.  Una cosa che ti raccomando caldamente e questa:  quando to studi una cosa non pensare ad altro.  Anche per questo e neccessario un po di esercizio ed un po di fatica sul principio, ma quando ti ci sarai abituato tu troverai che potrai studiare bene in mezz’ora quello che altrimenti ti porterebbe via due o tre ore.

Sometimes after you’ve completed your work, you might find it useful to compare it with a friends.  Also with this, don’t misuse the idea.  One thing I recommend heartily:  When you are studying, don’t think of anything else.  This too, takes some exercise and effort, but when you get used to it, you will find that in half an hour you’re able to study what takes other people two or three hours.

Non andare a cercare i pensieri sfogliando affrettatamente dei libri o ricordandoti di quello che puoi aver sentito da questo o quello, ma invece pensa a quello che devi scrivere e scrivi come la tua mente detta.  In genere non ti consiglio di copiare.  In primo luogo questo e un inganno che tu fai o che tu credi di fare al professore.  In secondo luogo copiando non si impara nulla, specialmente se si  copia cosi materialmente, come potrebbe fare una macchina per scrivere.

Do not go looking for thoughts hastily browsing books or remembering what you may have heard of this or that, but instead think about what you write and write as your mind dictates.  In general, I would not advise you to copy.  In the first place, this is a deception that you think you are doing for the professor.  And second, you will not learn anything if you copy, especially if you copy so materially that you become a typewriter.

Per esempio nei collegi d’Inghilterra ed anche qui in America, quelli che riescono piu bravi in certi giuochi che richiedono molta agilita forza e destrezza sono tanto quanto quelli che fanno le piu belle composizioni e le piu belle versioni latine.  Quanto alla composizione italiana mi raccomando di scrivere sempre quello che tu pensi, anche se cio qualche volta ti potra riescire non piacevole.  

For example in English and American colleges, those who are best in certain sports that require a lot of agility and strength and dexterity are just as likely to be the students that write the best compositions and Latin translations.  When you are studying Italian composition I recommend that you always write what you think, even if sometimes you won’t be able to be pleasant.

Cosi utilissimi sono i giochi della barra bandiera etc. che probabilmente saranno permesi nel collegio.  Sfortunatamente da noi la ginnastica non e molto coltivata, ansi alcuni la stimano come una cosa poco importante, mentre in Inghilterra e negli Stati Uniti la ginnastica e tenuta assai in onore.

Some games that are really usefull are the bar and flag games that are probably permitted in college.  Unfortunately for us, gym/fitness is not cultivated much, indeed in some estimates people think it is of little importance, meanwhile in England and the US fitness is given an honored place.

Cosi pure utilissimo per la vita e lo studio delle lingue straniere.  Pure molto utile e la geografia, alla quale purtroppo pochi fanno attenzione.  Quanto alla storia studiala essendo divertente, ma mi raccomando di non crederci troppo essen--dovi entro molta roba non vera.  Dedicati invece assa alla ginnastica e specialmente alla corsa ed a quegli esercizi in cui tutto il corpo e in movimento.

Studying foreign languages is also extremely useful for life.  Geography, which unfortunately few people pay attention to, is also very useful.  Although its interesting to study history, I recommend you don’t believe too much of what you read, because a lot of it isn’t true.  Instead dedicate some attention to the gym, especially to exercises in which the whole body is in movement.

Sometimes I fall behind in this project, but every time I return to Camillo's letters I feel like he hands me a dusty gem that's been boxed up in the family attic. Today is one of those days.

Sara una fatica fatta una volta per tutte e non avrai piu da pensarci in seguito.  Studia attentamente l’aritmetica anche se non ti piace, perche non vi e altro studio migliore per far ragionare bene e questo e la cosa migliore che gli uomini posseggano, sebbene alcuni, tra cui forse alcuni dei tuoi professori, non la pensino cosi.

If you make an effort once and for all, you won’t need to go back and do more later.  Study arithmetic attentively, even if you don’t like it, because there is no better subject for learning to reason well and this is the most important thing that men possess, although some people, perhaps even some of your teachers might not agree.

Naturalmente per poter capire bene una cosa bisogna aver studiato quelle che la precedono.  Cosi, studiando il latino, non incominciare la seconda declinazione prima di conoscere perfettamente la prima, studiando aritmetica non passare alle proporzioni prima di esser ben sicuro delle quattro operazioni.  Nello studio delle lingue, per esempio del latino o del francese, tu devi studiare ben bene la grammatica incominciando dal principio.

Naturally, to understand something well you need to study the concept that precedes it.  For example, if you’re studying latin, you don’t start with the second declension before perfectly knowing the first, when you’re studying arithmetic, you don’t move onto fractions before feeling very sure about the four operations.  When studying languages, for example Latin or French you have to study the grammar, starting with the subject, very very well.

Naturalmente le prime volte tu troverai cio difficile, ma poi a poco a poco ti abituerai e troverai che lo studiare diventa facile, alle volte interessante e sempre istruttivo.  Purtroppo alle volte troverai che ti sara impossibile di capire tutto quello che ti hanno dato da imparare.  Allora fa’almeno il possibile per capire quanto piu puoi. Questa regola, qualora seguita a dovere, e di un utile immenso perche serve piu che ogni altra cosa ad aprire l’intelligenza e a far imparare a ragionare.

Naturally, you may find this difficult at first, but little by little you’ll get used to it and find that studying becomes easy, sometimes interesting and always instructive.  Unfortunately, sometimes you’ll find it will be impossible to understand everything that’s been given to you to learn.  Well then, do the least amount possible for understanding as much as you can.  This rule, even though its derived from necessity, is of immense use because it’s more useful than anything else for opening up the intelligence and learning to think.

Dipende infine dal modo di studiare ed e appunto sul modo di studiare che ti voglio parlare.  La prima regola per studiare bene e quella di capir bene quello che si studia.  Non imparar mai a memoria una cosa senza averla capita e piuttosto lascia di studiare un pezzo che non capisci, ma non andar a recitare a mo di pappagallo una serie di parole una dopo l’altra.

Finally, it depends on the way you study and that’s what I want to talk to you about, the way you study.  The first rule for studying well is to really understand what you’re studying.  Don’t learn anything by memorizing something without having understood it first, and more or less leaving something you don’t understand to study later, but don’t go and recite one word after another like a parrot either.

Ora per qual ragione alcuni riescono a trovar tempo per divertirsi e per studiare mentre cio ad altri non reisce?  Cio dipende anzitutto da alcune qualita naturali come l’ingegno e la memoria, ma di queste e meglio non parlarne perche credo che tu non ne manchi, senza perche che tu ti debba credere di essere in questo superiore alla media.  Dipende molto dalla buona volonta ed a questa tu puoi comandare.

Now, how is it that some succeed at finding time for having fun and studying while others dont.  First, this depends on a few natural qualities like intelligence and memory, but its better we don’t talk about these because you lack neither.  It depends a lot on good work [literal translation is goodwill] and on what you are able to control [translation of comandare is control--but I’m not sure that’s the right word here].

Io ho conosciuto dei giovani che trovavan sempre tempo far tutto, per studiare e per divertirsi; altri invece trovavan tempo soltanto per studiare; alcuni trovavan tempo solo per divertirsi ed infine non pochi non sapevano ne studiare ne divertirsi.  Mi piacerebbe molto che tu appartenessi alla prima categoria, sarei meno contento se tu fossi da comprendere nella seconda o nella terza, ma sarei addirittura dispiacente se ti si dovesse classificare fra gli ultimi.

I knew young people who always found time to do everything, to study and to have fun, others, on the other hand, only found time to study, and some only found time to have fun, and finally quite a few didn’t figure out how to study or have fun.  I’d really like if you belonged in the first category.  I’d be less happy if you found yourself in the second or the third, but I’d be even more unhappy if you had to be classified in the last group.

Ed ora dopo essermi rallegrato teco permetti che ti dia alcuni consigli sul modo di comportarti nelle scuole che seguirai in questi anni, consigli che probabilmente no potrai trovare sui libri, ove anzi talvolta ne troverai alcuni opposti o per lo meno diversi.  La prima cosa a cui tu devi fare attenzione e al modo di studiare.

And now that I’ve welcomed myself let me give you some advice about how you should conduct yourself in the school you will be attending this year, advice that you probably won’t find in books, where you may even find some advice that is opposite or at least different from what I have to say.  The first thing is that you need to pay attention to how you study.

A proposito di Gesuiti, devi sapere che i Gesuiti di San Francisco dipendon direttamente dai Gesuiti di Torino e che molti dei denari che servono alla manipolazione delle elezioni ed all’eunuchimento della gioventu torinese son provveduti dalla California.  Sembra impossibile, ma e vero.  Addio.  non ti scrivo di piu essendo stanco per aver scritto questa sera 4 lettere, di cui quel po’ po’ di tiritera ad Umberto, e per aver fatto ques’oggi 48 chilometri in bicicletta.

Certo che alcuni dei consigli che gli do non saranno molto consoni con le massime che ricevera in quel collegio di Gesuiti in cui l’avete messo.  Vorrei sperare, ma non lo posso, che qell’educazione gesuitesca non lasci alcuna traccia nell’animo suo!  Dovresti parlarne a Ferraris e sentire quello che dice questi collegi di Gesuiti!  Almeno son contento che essendo passato al ginnasio e da sperare vi stara un anno di meno!

I’m sure that some of my advice won’t go along nicely with the maxims that he’s receiving in this Jesuit college you put him in.  I’d like to hope, but I can’t , that this Jesuit education won’t leave a single trace in his soul.  You need to talk to Ferrari and find out what they’re saying in this Gesuit collge.  At least he’s passed out of gym and we can hope for one less year there!

Tutta questa compagine di edifici giace in un enorme parco piantato ad eucaliptus ed altre bellissime piante.  Annessa pure all’universita e appartenente ad esse e una farm, ove vengono allevati circa 1500 cavalli di cui un terzo da corsa e due terzi di lusso.  Tra la farm ed il parco occupano un’area di  3400 etari, onde non ti meraviglierai se non ho ancora avuto tempo che di visitarne una piccola parte, malgrado l’aiuto del mio cavallo di ferro.


This whole team of buildings lies in an enormous parc planted with eucalyptus and other beautiful plants.  There is also a farm next to the university, which the university owns, where they raise about 1500 horses, of which one third are for racing and two thirds are for luxury.  The park and the farm take up about 3400 hectare (hectares=10,000 sq meters) that I won’t marvel you with because I haven’t yet had time to visit even a small part, despite the help I have from my iron horse (I’m assuming this is the bike he built!).

Altri edifici giaccion all’esterno e tra questi il laboratorio e l’officina di elettrotecnica, l’officina ed il laboratorio meccanico, la posta etc.  Questi sono destinati a far parte di un secondo quadrangolo enorme, che nel progetto deve comprendere nel suo interno il primo quadrangolo di cui ti ho parlato piu sopra.  Altri edifici sono in via di costruzione.  due enormi dormitori, uno pei maschi e l’altro per le femmine , giacciono poco distanti.  La quelli degli studenti che vogliono posson trovare una cameretta ed una pensione poco prezzo.  Il dormitorio maschile contiene 300 studenti quello femminile 150 ma sono insufficiente al bisogno essendo questi posti assai ricercati.  Pure annessa all’universita vi e una palestra ginastica assai ben fornita ed un museo di belle arti, nel cui edificio soltanto furon spesi circa 300.000 dollari.

The other buildings, like the laboratory, the electrical engineering office, the office and the lab for mechanical engineering, the post office, etc, lie outside the courtyard.  These buildings are intended to be part of a second huge quadrangle that will include the first, which I described above.  Other buildings are under construction.  Two large dormitories one for mend and the other for women are nearby.  These are good for students who want to sign up for room and board at a low price.  The men’s dormitory contains 300 students and the women’s dorm 150, but they are not big enough, as these places are much sought after.  Also, annexed to the university there is a well equipped gym and a fine arts museum.  And they only spent about $300,000 (not sure whether this means for all he described, or for the art museum...$300,000 seems like a lot in 1893).

Essa consta essenzialmente di un enorme quadrilatero, ai lati del quale stanno disposte le varie scuole e gran parte dei gabinetti.  L’edificio e tutto in pietra bruna assai elegante, ma a parer mio e un po’ troppo basso data la grandezza delle altre dimensioni.  Esso e ad un sol piano ed un tetto rosso lo ricopre interamente, un tetto pero che e troppo grande per un edificio cosi basso.  Tutti gli edifici del quadrangolo principale sono collegati tra di loro da un bellissimo porticato a colonne.

This essentially consists of an enormous quadrangle, around the sides of which the various schools are laid out along with a large section of bathrooms (?).  The edifice is all of a brown stone which is elegant enough, but it seems to me that the structure is a little too short given the grandness of the other dimensions.  The whole thing is only one level and a red roof covers the building entirely, a roof, however that is too big for a building that is so low.  All of the buildings around the main quadrangle are connected between them with a beautiful columned portico.

Alle volte vado a fare delle biciclettate con la mia ottima macchina.  Oggi per esempio sono andato e tornato da Palo Alto a Santa Clara, una citta di 4000 abitanti distante circa 24 chilometri, facendo cosi una delle biciclettate piu lunghe che ho fatto da due anni in questa parte.  Sono stato due volte a San Francisco e tra le altre cose mi son comprato un abito fatto.  Naturalmente adesso le mie descrizioni non sono piu cosi interessanti come quelle di qualche settimana fa e cio e naturale perche non vedo piu nuove citta e nuove contrade.

Ti potrei descrivere quella in cui io sono, che e realmente interessante; naturalmente la cosa principale e l’universita di cui un giorno o l’altro ti mandero delle fotografie.

From time to time I go on bike rides with my well made machine.  For example, today I went back and forth from Palo Alto to Santa Clara, a city with 4000 residents about 24 kilometers away, so that was the longest bike ride that I’ve done in two years, and the longest bike ride I’ve done here.  I’ve been to San Francisco twice, and among other things, I bought myself a suit.  Naturally, these days, my descriptions aren’t as exciting as the ones from a few weeks ago, which is natural since I haven’t seen any more new cities or new countries.

I could tell you about where I am, which is actually interesting, naturally the principal thing is the university, photos of which I will send to you one day or another.

Io qui sto benissimo.  Parte della mia giornata la passo al laboratorio a fare esperienze per mio conto.  Avendo io una delle due chiavi del detto laboratorio, ci vado quando voglio senza nessuna noia.  Al Mercoledi ed al venerdi faccio il mio compito di assistente che per ora si limita ad aiutare i giovani che stanno facnedo misure nel laboratorio di elettrotecnica e nell’officina.  Ora poi ho da disegnare una macchina pel Professore ma ho paura venga costare troppo.  E vero che la signora Stanford paga.

Over here I’m doing very well.   I start my day by way of the laboratory to do my own experiments (I think the transcription of “esperienze” may be incorrect).  I have one of the two keys to the laboratory, and I to go there without any boredom.  On Wednesday and Friday I do my job as assistant, which for now is limited to helping the young students who are taking measurements in the electrical engineering lab and in the office.  Now I have to draw a “macchina” (currently this means car, but I’m not sure it meant car in 1893) for my professor, but I worry that it will cost too much.  It’s true Mrs. Stanford pays for these things.

Indirizzo questa lettera a Modena perche in una lettera tua respintami ultimamente dal signor Bolognesi mi dicevi che probabilmente ti saresti recata costi.  Mi rincresce perche probabilmente sarai rimasta senza mie notizie piu a lungo del solito, avendo indirizzato le ultime due lettere a casa, una allo zio per vedere di metterlo quieto ed una a Carlo.  Avevo pensato poi che in ogni modo avresti avuto notizie mie da Piero a cui ho scritto una lunga lettera.  Probabilmente a quest’ora tu saprai gia della mia risoluzione di rimanere in California fino alla fine di maggio e sono curioso di sapere quello che ne pensi.

Sono molto contento che Umberto sia passato al ginnasio perche cosi avra un anno di meno di quello noiossime e inutilissime scuole in cui incretinsce la cosidetta gioventu studiosa del beato regno d’Italia, prima di poter riuscire a seguire la propria vocazione nell’universita.  Sono anche contento perche e anche un po’ merito mio se i suoi parenti si sono decisi a fargli prendere quest’esame.

I’m very happy that Umberto passed to the next level in school because it means one less boring and useless year being a so called young student of the Blessed Kingdom of Italy, before being able to follow his real vocation in university.  I’m also happy because a little credit should go to the relatives to encouraged him to take this exam.

Mi presento poi in due dei piu eminenti club di San Francisco ottenendo per me un biglietto che da diritto per alcune settimane a tutti i privilegi dei soci.  Per esempio, ora io sto scrivendo nell’ampia e lussuosa sala del Bohemian Club, servendomi dell’ottima carta che questo club fornisce.  Cosi poco fa feci una squisita colazione al restaurant privato annesso al club, e cosi posso usufruire della biblioteca ottima e ben fornita che questo club possiede.  Cosi sono stato anche introdotto all’University Club che e uno dei piu aristocrati.

Oggi poi andro col dottor Ollino ad un concerto ove faro conoscenza coi maggiorenti della colonia italiana e cosi anch domani e dopo saro occupato piacevolamente.  Adesso termino perch non voglio abusare della carta del club.  Continua scrivermi a San Francisco percho non so quando abbandonero questo paese delizioso.  Salutami tanto lo zio ed i Marselli a cui questa lettera si puo considerare anche diretta.  Ricordami ad Epifania ed Tommasin.  Baci ai bimbi ricordandomi alle famiglie amiche.

Afterward I was presented in two of the most important clubs in San Francisco and they obtained a temporary membership for me, with all the rights and privileges in the club for a few weeks.  For example, right now I’m writing to you from the ample and brightly lit salon at the Bohemian Club, where they are letting me use the excellent paper that the club provides.  Recently I had a wonderful breakfast at the private restaurant attached to the club, and was able to take advantage of the club’s well-stocked library.  I was also recently introduced at the University Club which is one of the oldest and most exclusive clubs.

Today I went with Dr. Ollino to a concert where I met with the elders of the italian community and tomorrow I’m also pleasantly busy.  I’ll end here because I don’t want to abuse my situation with the paper at the club.  Continue to write to me here in San Francisco, because I don’t know when I’ll leave such a delicious place.  Give warm greetings to uncle and to Marselli, to whom you can consider this letter also directed.  Tell Epifania and Tommasin I say hello.  Kisses to the little ones and warm greetings to the family friends.  Kisses from

Venerdi sera adunque, munito di questa lettera, mi recai alla casa di questo signore.  Si vede che la lettera di Ferraris era molto lusinghiera per me perche, appena letta la, mi fece un accoglienza superiore ad ogni aspettazione.

Devi sapere che Devecchi e un vecchio amico di Ferraris.  Egli fu compagno d’armi nelle campagne garibaldine del fratello del Professore, Adamo Ferraris, morto a Digione nel ‘71 e compagno di scuola ed amico di famiglia col Professore.

Non ti so dire tutte le gintilezze che questo signore mi fece in questi due giorni.  Mi invito ieri ad un ottimo pranzo innaffiato copiosamente, ove connobi la bella e simpatica signora Devecchi ed il vecchio dottore Ollino, anche lui una persona simpaticissima.

So, Friday night, armed with this letter, I went to this man’s house.  It was obvious that the letter from Ferraris was very flattering, because as soon as he read it, he gave me a warmer welcome than I anticipated.

The thing is, Devecchi is an old family friend of Ferraris.  He accompanied Ferraris’s brother, Adamo,  (who died in Dijon in ‘71) in the garibaldine campaign, and was a classmate and family friend.

I cannot tell you the kindness that this man extended me these last two days.  He invited me to an excellent meal (watered profusely?), in which we were accompanied by his wonderful wife and the old Dr. Ollino was exceptionally nice.

Egli si fece una fortuna enorme ed e una delle persone piu stimate sia delle colonie straniere sia dai puri americani.  E ora il primo chirurgo di San Francisco ed diventato completamente americano.  Ha sposato qualche anno fa una bella e ricca signorina del luogo ed ora padre felice di due bei maschetti e di una bellismima bimba.  Per darti l’idea di quello che un professionista celebre puo guadagnare qui, diro che il dottor Devecchi per una certa categoria di operazioni quando si fa pagare (il che non sempre avviene), si fa pagare 600 dollari ognuna.  Egli lavora moltissimo, ma conduce una vita sontuosa.  Quattro anni fa venne a Torino con l’intenzione di stabilirvisi, ma poi no ci si potette piu adattare e se ne ritorno a San Francisco.

He made an enormous fortune and is one of the most respected people in the foreign and american community alike.   Now he is the top surgeon in San Francisco and has become completely American.  A few years ago he married a pretty, rich girl from here and now is father to two beautiful boys and one beautiful girl.  To give you an idea of what a well respected professional can earn here, I’ll tell you that Dr. Devecchi, for one type of surgery, when he gets paid (the money doesn’t always come), they pay him $600 per operation.  He works a lot but he leads a lavish life.  Four years ago he went to Turin with the intention to live there, but he couldn’t adapt to being there so he returned to San Francisco.

Il dottor Devecchi era un 15 anni fa uno dei piu distinti medici di Torino.  Venne allora a fare un viaggio di piacere in America.  Quando si trova a New York un amico suo, dottor Ollino, pure piemontese e di piu anni stabilito a San Francisco, gli scrisse invitandolo a venire a California per aiutarlo ad una giovinetta millionaria di qui.  Egli venne qui con l’intenzione di dipartirsene subito, ma il successo ottenuto nella prima operazione gli procuro subito una clientela numerosa ed ottima e cosi fu che si decise a lasciar andar la clientela italiana e l’assistentato ad una cattedra che aveva a Torino, per rimanersene a San Francisco.

About fifteen years agot Dr. Devecchi was one of the most distinguished physicians in Turin.  He was then to make a pleasure trip to America.  When he found himself in New York, a friend of his, Dr. Ollino, a Piemontese who had for a few years been in San Francisco, wrote to him, inviting him to come to California to help him with a young millionaire (girl..) here.  He came here with the intention to leave quickly, but the success he obtained in his first operation brought him a good client quickly and so he decided to let go of his itialian clients and assistant chair position in Turin in order to stay in San Francisco.

l giorno prima l’impiegata si era sbagliata e non mi aveva dato nulla, mentre invece eran giacenti due tue lettere, di cui una indirizzata a Quebec l’altra a San Francisco, una lettera di Umberto assai ben redatta, con accompagnamento di scritti d’Emma e di Carlo, quattro altre cartoline tue e dei Marselli, una lettera di Finzi che pare deciso a stabilarsi definitivamente in America e una lettera gentilissima del prof.  Ferraris scritta prima di salpare per l’italia.  Io gli avevo scritto da St. Paul le mie intenzioni di viaggiare verso l’Ovest ed egli fu cosi buono di scrivermi mandandomi nello stesso tempo una lettera di calda raccomandazione pel dottor Devecchi,  un vecchio amico suo, lettera che come vedrai mi fu di un utile enorme.

The day before the clerk made a mistake and didn’t give me anything, meanwhile lying around at the post office there were two of your letters one addressed to Quebec and the other to San Francisco, one letter well written letter from Umberto with accompanying messages from Emma and Carlo, four more of your and Marselli’s postcards, one letter from Finzi in which he seems to have definitively decided to stay in America, one very kind letter from Professor Ferraris written before leaving for Italy.  I had written him from St. Paul to let him know of my intentions to travel west, and he was so good to write me and at the same time send me a warm letter of recommendation from Doctor Devecchi, one of his old friends, a letter that basically says that anyone will see that I will be enormously useful.

Ripresa dopo colazione

Arrivai a San Francisco giovedi mattina.  Di San Francisco e della California ti parlero a lungho altra volta.  Ora ti diro solo quel che mi accadde nei due giorni di permanenza costi.

Appena arrivato andai alla posta ove aspettavo con ansieta vostre lettre.  Qaul fu il mio stupore quando mi rispose che non v’era nulla al mi indirizzo, eppure io avevo scritto a Quebec perche mi inviassero qui le lettere cola indrizzate!  Girai tutto il giorno per cercare un alloggio e finalmente presi una camera a un dollaro al giorno ad un piccolo albergo.  Venerdi mattina ritornai alla posta e vi trovai un mucchio di lettere.

I arrived in San Francisco Thursday morning.  I’ll tell you about San Francisco and California at length another time.  Right now I’ll just tell you what’s happened to me in this two day stay.

As soon as I arrived I went to the post office where I anxiously awaited your letter.  What a stupor fell over me when they told me there was nothing at my address, even though I wrote to you from Quebec so that you would send me letters here with this address.  I walked around all day looking for lodging and finally took a room for a dollar a day at a little hotel.  Friday morning I returned to the post office and found a bunch of letters.

Gli Americani in genere non amano fare le gallerie, e piuttosto fanno fare alla strada mille giri e rigiri e fanno superare ai treni salite e discese vertiginose.  Si puo molto discutere sulla bonta di questi sistemi.  E certo pero che se le ferrovie americane avesser dovuto esser costruite con quei criteri di monumentalita con cui sono costruite le ferrovie europee, non vi sarebbe alcuna linea che congiungerebbe l’Atlantico al Pacifico e queste regioni sarebbero ancora allo stato selvaggio.

The Americans in general don’t love making [galleries], instead they make thousands of twists and turns, and they do better than the trains that make dizzying ascents and descents.  We could have a long discussion about merits of this system.  It’s certain, however, that that if the american rails had to be constructed by the same building criteria as the rails built in europe, there wouldn’t be a continuous rail line from the Atlantic to the Pacific and these regions would still be wild.

Esso era anticamente un vulcano ed ancor ora si vedon distintamente i due coni che lo formano.  La strada ferrata, che e una delle piu difficile chi sien state fatte in America, passa ai piedi di questo monte, dopo interminabili giri e rigiri.

Ho potuto ammirare in questo viaggio il coraggio degli americani che fan passare i loro treni sopra ponti e viadotti in legno che quando non cascano stanno su per miracolo.  Quelle che noi chiamiamo opere d’arte qui hanno tutte un aspetto provvisorio.  Cosi le poche gallerie che si incontrano sono tutte le puntellate con travi e sostenute da assi in legno, i viadotti-- dei quali alcuni altissimi--sono sorretti solo da pile in legno che portano soltanto le traversine e le rotaie.

It started off as a volcano and you can still distinctly see the two cones that formed it.  The railroad, which was one of the most difficult to build in America, goes by the foot of this mountain after endless twists and turns.

On this trip I’ve admired the Americans’ courage to have their trains travel over bridges and viaducts made of wood that when they don’t fall, stay put by miracle.  What we would call works of art, here in the United States all of them have a provisional look.  So, the few galleries that you encounter are all shored up with beams and boards, supported by wooden viaducts--some of which are supported by tall stacks of wood.

Dopo tre giorni di permanenza a Portland, martedi sera presi il treno diretto a San Francisco.  Da Portland a San Francisco vi sono circa 1000 chilometri, ma vi e un solo treno al giorno, e questo e assai lento e impiega circa 40 ore.  La strada pero e veramente pittoresca ed io passai tutta la giornata di mercoledi diliziandomi in spelndidi paesaggi, tra cui rimarchevole e quello che offre il monte Shasta alto circa 5000 metri.

After a three day stay in Portland, Tuesday evening I took the direct train to San Francisco.  Its about 1,000 kilometers between Portland and San Francisco, but there is only one train a day and it is very slow, taking about 40 hours.  However, the route is truly picturesque and I passed all day Wednesday delighting in splendid landscapes, among these delights/treasures? is Mount Shasta which is about 5000 meters high.

Mi dissero poi che non era prudente scostarsi molto dall’abitato senza esser armato di un buon fucile a ripetizione, e cio in causa degli orsi e specialmente di una specie di orsi detti Grizzly Bear che sono molto terribili, specialmente perche hanno una resistenza vitale enorme tanto che si racconta di qualcuno di questi animali che resisettero adieci o dodici palle in parti vitali prima di decidersi a morire.  Un altro pericolo e dato dai serpenti a sonagli che pero non sono tanto terribili quanto la leggenda vorrebbe.  Io pero non ho visto ne serpenti ne orsi ed ho incontrato solo qualche scoiattolo e degli uccelli.

I was told afterward that it wasn’t prudent to go too far from town without being armed with a repeating (?) rifle, because of the bears, especially a species of bears called Grizzly Bears that are very dangerous, especially because they are so tough and vital that I’ve even heard of these animals being hit by ten or twelve bullets before deciding to die.  Another danger is presented by the rattle snakes that even though they’re as dangerous as legend would have it.  But I didn’t see either snakes or bears, I only ran into squirrels and birds.

Portland ha un parco vastissimo ed e costruita sulle falde in un colle dalla cima del quale si gode un’ottima vista.  Essa ha la fortuna di esser sulle rive del Willamette, un gran fiume navigable ance dai piu grandi bastimeni.  Questo fume poco dopo si getta nel Columbia River, il quale a sua volta ha la foce nel Pacifico.  Cosi Portland come Londra, ha tutti i vantaggi della citta di mare senza averne i danne.  A Portland, come del resto in tutte le citta della costa, travai vivere molto a buon mercato e mi capito quasi sempre di mangiar ottimamente e copiosamente con circa quaranta o cinqanta centesimi.  A Portland feci una lunga passeggiata a piedi nei dintorni e mi inoltrai per diverse miglia in una valle ove solo un sentiero, praticato nel messo d’una fitta foresta di pini, mastodontici, mostrava la presenza dell’uomo.

Portland has a vast park that is built on the slopes of a hill, from which you can take in a fantastic view.  As a city, it has the good luck to be located on the Willamette, a huge river that is navigable even by the biggest ships.  After a bit, this river flows into the Columbia River, which in turn, has its mouth in the Pacific.  In this way, Portland, like London, has all the advantages of a city by the sea without the risk of the damage the sea can cause.  In Portland, like in the rest of the cities by the coast I’ve found life to be inexpensive and I’ve always eaten copiously and well for about forty or fifty cents.  In Portland I took a long walk through the interior and I trod for several miles in a valley where only one path, carved in a dense forest of mammoth pine trees, was the only evidence of man.

A Seattle me fermai due giorni e poi me ne partii per Portland, la capitale dell’Oregon, un altro grande stato che ha un grande avvenire innanzi a se come produttore di minerali, di legno, di frutta, di bestiame e di prodotti agricoli in genere.  Il clima e qui tempertato e nella parte nord molto umido.

Portland e una citta elegante ed e forse la citta che di quelle che ho visto dopo che lasciai Washington (la capitale) ha piu belle strade.  A Portland andai a teatro a vedere un’operetta che per dir la verita era molto ben rappresentata.

I stopped to days in Seattle and then I left for Portland, the capital of Oregon, another big state that has a great future ahead of it in mining, timber, fruit, livestock, and agriculture in general.  The climate here is temperate and very humid in the north.  

Portland is an elegant city and probably, of all the cities I’ve seen since leaving Washington (the capital) has the most beautiful streets.  In Portland, I went to the theatre to see and Opera, and to tell the truth, it was very well performed.

E orribile, come bruttissimi sono in genere questi indiani della costa, molto in cio diversi dagli indiani delle tribu interne che sono gente bellissima, comeche ora degradati dai liquori e dai vizi che essi hanno imparati dai bianchi.  La razza indiani e, si puo dire, quasi finita, dopo una lotta lunga e terribile con l’elemento bianco, lotta in cui piu barbari non furon certo le pellirosse, lotta in cui i bianchi dovettero la vittoria ai tradimenti ed ai cannoni, non certo alla bonta della loro causa ed alla civilta nell’agire.

But they are horrible, these indians from the coast, ugly and awful, very different from the indian tribes from the interior, who are beautiful people, however now, degraded by liquor and vices that they’ve learned from the whites.  The indian race, you could say, is nearly finished, after a long and terrible struggle with the white element, a struggle in which there were certainly no more barbarous than the redskins, a struggle in which the whites owed their victory to trade and canons, certainly not to the justice of their cause or to civility in action.

Ho trovato a Seattle un ottimo family hotel ove con 50 centesimi (di dollaro) al giorno ho avuto un’eccellente camera.  Cola’ ho fatto la conoscenza di diverse simpatiche signore con cui mi sono trattenuto piacevolmente.  Ho visitato alcuni dei dintorni e tra questi lo splendido lago Washington, uno dei piu belli che abbia visto.  Seattle e stata fondata un venti anni fa e come Chicago porta il nome di un capo indiano che possedeva anticamente il suolo ove ora sorge la citta.  La sua figlia Angelina vecchia di 70 anni vive ancora ed e mantenuta dal commune e forma una delle particolarita della citta.

In Seattle I found a great family hotel where for fifty cents (out of a dollar) a day I have an excellent room.  While there I met a few different nice people who I’ve pleasantly stayed in touch with (?).  I visited a few of the surrounding areas among which the splendid Lake Washington was one of the most beautiful that I’ve seen.  Seattle was founded twenty years ago and like Chicago it is named after an Indian chief who formerly owned the land where the city now stands.  That is daughter, Angelina, at 70 years old, is still alive and supported by the city is one of the peculiarities of Seattle.

Ma torniamo alla nostra storia:  malgrado che a Tacoma mi ci stessi cosi bene, il giorno dopo presi commiato dagli amici di cola e mi diressi verso Seattle, un a citta situata anch’essa sul Puget Sound e che, benche abbia pochi anni di vita, ha un aspetto molto signorile e simpatico.  Seattle oltre che numerose scuole possiede un’universita che ho visitato.

But returning to our story, despite that Tacoma was kind to me, the next day I parted from my friends there and headed down to Seattle, another city situated on The Puget Sound, and that despite being a young city has a very elegant, nice atmosphere.  Seattle also has a lot of schools and possesses a university, which I visited.

Alla sera accompagnato dal Signor Bartow e dalla sua signora (brutta ma gentile) sono andato ad un a specie di ballo di beneficenza ove sono stato presentato a numerose simpatiche signorine.  Si vede che ho destato la loro simpatia perche intorno a me si e formato un gran cerchio di persone in gran parte appartenenti al sesso gentile, con cui mi son trattenuto fino alla fine (mezzanotte) in una conversazione animatisma.  Noi in genere abbiamo un concetto enormamente sbagliato delle signorine americane, come in genere abbiamo un concetto sbagliato di tutto quanto riguarda l’America, ma di questo scrivero un giorno o l’altro a Carlo che ha piu di ogni altro bisogno di riformare non tutte ma, molte delle sue idee riguardo al sesso femminile americano, a cui si puo applicare l’aggettivo gentile, ma non l’aggettivo debole.

In the evening, accompanied by Mr. Bartow and his wife (ugly but kind), I went to a kind of benefit ball where I was introduced to a number of nice young women.  It was obvious that I attracted their attention because a big circle of people formed around me, mostly belonging to the fairer sex who remained in animated conversation with me until the end (midnight).  In general, we have a mistaken idea about American women, like the mistaken ideas we have about America in general, but in this regard, one day I’ll write to Carlo who more than anyone needs to change his ideas, not all of them, but a lot of them that have to do with American women, to whom one could apply the adjective kind, but not weak or stupid.

Mi pare d’averti detto che ero arrivato a Tacoma ove avevo fatto la conoscenza di un certo signor Bartow, preside di una scuola, che era stato assai gentile con me.  Questo signore, dopo avermi fatto visitare le scuole, mi condusse ad una adunanza che si teneva per decidere sull’ erezione di un museo d’arte che anocro non esiste a Tacoma, cosa notevole perche tutte queste citta sboccianti come funghi ne suolo americano per prima cosa fondan le scuole poi le bibliotche e po le accademie e le collezioni artistiche.  La seduta fu piuttosto noiosa, e vero, ma in compenso fui cola presentato alle notabilita di Tacoma si vede che tra queste vi era un giornalista che prese informazioni sul mio povero io, tanto che il giorno dopo mi vidi pubblicato su di giornale che credo d’averti mandato.  Dopo la seduta il signor Bartow m’invito a pranzo a Commercial Club, ove si mangio benissimo ed ove passai il resto della sera.

I think I told you that when I arrived in Tacoma I met a certain Mr. Bartow, dean of a school, who was very kind to me.  This gentleman, after letting me visit the school, let me to a meeting, that was held to decide about building an art museum that doesn’t yet exist in Tacoma, this was notable because all of these cities which bloom like fungus in american soil, first found schools, then libraries, and then the [academies?] and then art collections.  The session was more or less boring, true, but in exchange I was presented to the important people in Tacoma, among which was a journalist who took information from poor little me, enough so that the next day I saw myself published in the paper that I sent you.  After the session Mr. Barto invited me to a dinner a The Commercial Club, where we ate well and where I passed the rest of the evening.

Carissima mamma,

Eccomi arrivato a San Francisco dopo un viaggio un po’ lunghetto ma estremamente fortunato, come potrai vedere dalla susseguente descrizione del medesimo.  Ma per procedere con ordine e perche tu, lo zio ed i Marselli siate informati appuntino, delle cose mie, ripigliero la narrazione dal punto ove l’ho lasciata l’ultima volta.

Here I am, I’ve arrived in San Francisco after a trip that was a little long, but extremely fortunate, as you will see in the following description.  But to proceed in good order and to keep you, uncle and the Marsellis up to date on my news, I’ll start from where I left off the last time.

Ieri mattina glorioso e trionfonte me ne vado con le mie lettere verso il centro degli affari e mentre sto aspettando il tramway (elettrico) vedo un gran edifizio.  Domando che cosa e.  E una scuola.  Tanto per non perder l’occasione entro dentro e domando del direttore.  Sono introdotto e mi presento ad un certo sig. Barrow, un uomo simpaticissimo sulla quarantina, e gli dico che sarei molto felice se potessi aver alcune informazioni sulle scuole di Tacoma.  Devi sapere che Tacoma possiede 17 scuole pubbliche frequente da piu di 4000 studenti e studentesse e che del resto queti americani appena hanno fondato un villaggio con 10 capanne vi fondano subito la loro brava scuola quando pure non vi metton un’universita.

Continuo la lettera come s niente fosse comeche sien passati due giorni e 800 chilometri circa.  Dunque il Sig. Barto, direttore di quella schula, mi accoglie splendidamente e mi conduce per tutte le aule...Ma di questo parlero in una mia prossima.

Per ora ti dico che sono arrivato felicemente a Seattle, dove mi fermero 2 giorni, dopo andro a Portland (3 giorni), quindi a Salem (Oregon), e finalmente a San Francisco.

Tante belle cose allo zio.  Ricordami ai conoscenti ad Ep e Tom.

Yesterday morning I triumphantly went with my letters to the to the center of business and while I was waiting for the tramway (electric) I see a big building.  I ask what it is.  It’s a school.  Not wanting to miss the opportunity, I go in and ask for the director.  I was introduced and presented to a certain Signor Bartow, a very kind man in his forties, and I told him that it would be great if he could give me some information about the schools in Tacoma.  I found out that Tacoma has 17 public schools that are attended by more than 4,000 students (men and women) and that there are these Americans who just founded a new village with 10 cabins and soon they will start their own great school, and also a university.

I’m continuing this letter like nothing has happened, except about two days and eighty kilometers.  Mr. Bartow, director of this school welcomed me very warmly and introduced me to everyone in the classrooms...But I’ll tell you about this in my next letter.

For now I’ll just tell you that I happily arrived in Seattle, where I stayed 2 days; then I’ll go to Portland (3 days), then Salem (Oregon), and finally to San Francisco.

Tacoma (la citta del destino) mi ha lasciato una impressione eccelente forse anche perche vi ho ricevuto un mondo di gentilezza.  Figurati che subito dopo sceso dalla ferrovia vado secondo il mio solito a dare una guardatina alla citta e come gia a St. Paul, trovo una bella camera amobiliata a 75 centesimi.  Dopo ritirato il mio baule alla stazione, entro in un magazzino di macchine per curiosare e trovo un signore gentilissimo che saputo che io viaggiavo per mio divertimento e che desideravo veder fabbriche e luoghi d’interesse im scrive due lettere di introduzione per il direttore del Commercial Club, che e uno dei migliori, e pel presidente della Camera di commercio.

I also have gotten an excellent impression of Tacoma (my current destination) because I’ve received a world of kindness.  Right after getting of the train I went by myself to take a look at the city, like I did in St. Paul, and I found a nice furnished room for 75 cents.  Then I left my trunk at the station, out of curiousity I went into a machine store and I found a friendly man who knew that I was traveling for fun and that I wanted to see factories and other interesting sites, and he wrote me two letters of introduction to The Commercial [maybe actually Commerce] Club (one of the best in the city) and to the President of the Chamber of Commerce.

Capirai che questo forma per lo stato una risorsa immensa e che si fara maggiore ogni giorno piu con l’accrescersi dei commerci e delle industrie.  Si puo dire che in questo porto posson trovare rifugio sicuro tutte le navi del mondo contemporaneamente.  Quattro citta importanti sorgon in questa baia:  Tacoma in cui sono attualmente, Seattle ove andro domani, Everett e Victoria.  Altre certamente sorgeranno in futuro.

I would think that this immense resource would become greater everyday with the growth of commerce and industry.  You could say that all of the boats in the contemporary world could find refuge in this port.  Four important cities have arisen in this bay.  Tacoma, where I am now, Seattle, where I’ll go tomorrow, Everett and Victoria.  Others will cerainly appear in the future.
