La popolazione, come del resto quella di San Francisco e assolutamente cosmopolita.  Yankees, inglesi, francesi, un gran numero di spagnoli, italiani, cinesi, giapponesi, tutti quanti danno alla citta un carattere assai vario.  Gli spagnoli predominano perche fino al principio del secolo questa regione in una col Messico appartneva alla Spagna, come del resto si vede facilmente osservando i nomi dei luoghi.

A Los Angeles mi attendeva la sorpresa di trovar la citta in pieno carnevale.  Non avrei mai creduto che il carnevale morto in Italia avesse a riuscitare, con piccolissimi varianti, nell’altro emisfero.  Qui lo chiamano la Fiesta e questo e il primo anno che lo fanno, imitando in cio quelli di New Orleans che lo hanno gia introdotto da anni.  Qui il carnevale lo fanno proprio come ad Ivrea, con quella comica serieta che ha caratterizzato per tanti anni il nostro carnevale.  Martedi vi fu un gran corso di galla con una quantita di carri e mascherate.  Precedeva un corteo di ufficiali a cavallo che hanno lo stesso carattere del nostro stato maggiore (pardon, ho dimenticato di dire brillante stato maggiore) con questa differenza, che qui cavalcavano superbamenti dei superbi cavalli.  Poi venivan carri rappresentanti l’industria, il commercio etc.  Poi carri rappresentanti colonie o societa e tra questi uno bellissimo, su cui facevan mostra di se una ventina di cinesi autentici in costumi davero splendidi.

Like in San Francisco, the population here is absolutely cosmopolitan.  Yankees, English, French, a large number of Spaniards, Italians, Chinese, Japonese, altogether give the city a diverse feeling.  The Spanish are predominant because up until the beginning of the century this region was a Mexican colony belonging to Spain, as it is easily seen by looking at the names of places.

In Los Angeles there was a surprise waiting for me--I found the city in full carnival.  I would never have believed that “il carnevale morto” in Italy could have existed with tiny variations in the other hemisphere.  Here they call it La Fiesta and this year is the first year they are doing it, imitating the one from New Orleans which was already introduced years ago.  Here they do the carnival a lot like they do it in Ivrea with the comical seriousness that characterized our carnival for years.  Tuesday there was a parade with a great deal of floats and masks.  There was a procession of mounted officers that have the same character as our staff (sorry, I forgot to mention brilliant staff) with the difference being that here the proud officers ride superb horses.  Then floats representing the industry and trade.  Then wagons representing colonies and among them a beautiful one with scores of authentic Chinese costumes that was, really really beautiful.

Alcuni, come il MacKay, divenuti ricchi pensaron a procurarsi quell’istruzione che non avevan avuto e se ne andaron all’Est o in Europa a frequentare l’universita.  Quelli che non fecero cio vi mandarono i loro figli e su questo substrato di desperados venne su la populazione californiana presente che non e per nulla peggio delle altre.  Ma lasciamo stare la vita claiforniana e l’Esposizione di San Francisco, in cui non vidi altro che gli scampoli di quella di Chicago.

Lasciai, come dissi, San Francisco lunedi, e martedi arrivai a Los Angeles, la capitale della California del sud.  Come tutte le citta della costa del Pacifico, Los Angeles gode di una temperatura assolutamente eguale sia in estate che in inverno, ed a differenza di San Francisco non vi e forte divario fra la temperatura di un’ora e quella di un’altra.

Qui fa piuttosto caldo, ma non tanto quanto sarebbe da aspettarsi considerando che la latitudine di Los Angeles e circa quella del Cairo.  Credo che la temperatura media sia circa 24 o 25 gradi, raggiungendo dei massimi di 30 gradi al piu e dei minimi di 20 gradi.

A few, like MacKay, became rich and thought to procure the education that they had not had if they had gone to University in the East or in Europe.  Those who didn’t, sent their children, and from this substrate of desperados comes the population of California which is no worse than the populations of others.  But let’s leave life in California and the San Francisco Exposition, in which I saw nothing much but the remnants of the one in Chicago.

Like I said, I left San Francisco Monday and Tuesday I arrived in Los Angeles, the capital of southern California.  Like all the cities on the Pacific Coast, Los Angeles enjoys a temperature that’s absolutely the same in summer as in winter, and the difference from San Francisco is that the temperature doesn’t change form hour to hour.

Here it’s more or less hot, but not too hot if you consider that Los Angeles is at the same latitude as Cairo.  I think the temperature averages between 24 and 25 degrees reaching highs of 30 and lows of 20 degrees minimum.

Se leggi qualche novella del Brett Harte ti puoi fare un’idea del modo di vivere di quella gente senza scrupoli e pronta ad ogni eccesso pur di arricchire.  E molti arricchiron realmente ed a quell’epoca risale il principio della fortuna dei MacKay, dei Fair e di altri millionari californiani.  Altri invece vi trovaron la morte sia pei disagi di quella vita sia per mano dei tanti delinquenti che in una societa cosi fatta non potevano mancare. Ma lo strano e che questa gente, una volta, consequito il loro scopo, divennero gente d’ordine, fecero una legislazione che non  e peggiore delle altre e quel che piu conta, la rispettarono.

If you read one of the Brett Harte novels you get the idea of these people’s way of life, without scruples and ready at any minute to use excess in order to get rich.  In reality they built a lot of wealth, and in this epoc dates the principle of the luck of MacKay, of the Fair and of other California millionaires.  Others found death and the hardships of living at the hands of many criminals, who made a society in which you could not miss (?).  The strange thing is, once they achieved their goals, they became people of order, they made a set of laws that are no worse than others and the thing that counted most was to be respected.

Lassu il signor Sutro, uno dei tanti milionari di California, ha fatto costruire un parco assai bello, non so se adornato o guastato da una quantita di statue di gesso.

Domenico poi fu a pranzo da Devecchi, pranzo molto buono ed innaffiato da champagne.  Sono stato pure alla Midwinter Fair.  Malgrado l’enorme reclame che le hanno fatto, mi parve riuscita meno che mediocremente.  Non vi e nulla di realmente bello eccetto la posizione in cui sorge, la nel Golden Gate, l’enorme parco che occupa la parte ovest della citta.

Vi e una parodia della torre Eiffel e se a parer mio l’originale di Parigi e piuttosto barocco, questa edizione in sedicesimo lo e ancor di piu.  Vi e pure una riproduzione in piccolo della grande altalena a ruota di Chicago, un villaggio cinese, uno giapponese e una quantita di turchi, egiziani etc.  piu o meno autentici.  Piu interessante per me i il mining camp che riproduce la abitazioni e il modo di vivere in California del ‘49, l’anno in cui chiamati dalla sete dell’oro da poco scoperto da un operaio (Marschall) precipitaron in California da ogni parte i disperati di ogni paese.

Up there Mr. Sutro, one of the many millionaires of California, has built a very nice park with I don’t know how many plaster statues.  Then Sunday I had brunch with Davecchi, I ate a very nice meal and washed it down with champagne.  I was also here for the Midwinter Fair.  Despite the enormous advertisements they did, it seemed to me its success was less than mediocre.  Thereis nothing really nice about it except its location, which was in the Golden Gate, the enormous park that’s located in the west side of the city.

There is a parody of the Eiffel Tower and it seems to me that if the original in Paris was more or less baroque this one, the sixteenth edition, is even more so.  There is also a small copy of the big ferris wheel from Chicago, a chinese village, a japanese a bit of turkish, egyptian, etc. more or less authentic.  The most interesting to me is the mining camp that represents the homes and way of life in California in the year of ‘49 which is called the goldrush and is when a worker (Marschall) discovered gold and desperate people from all over the country came to California.

Los Angeles, California 13 aprile, giovedi

Carissima mamma,

Come avrai saputo da una cartolina scribacchiata in treno, lunedi ho lasciato definitivamente San Francisco e me ne sono venuto al sud a Los Angeles, che probabilmente abbandonero stasera diretto a Salt Lake City (Utah), ove arrivero fra 10 o 12 giorni perche penso di fermarmi per strada qualche giorni.

Prima pero di abbondonare San Francisco ho fatto una gitta a Berkeley dall’altra parte della baia per visitare l’Universita di California, la rivale di Stanford.  Gli edifici sono meno grandiosi di quelli di Palo Alto, ma sono piuttosto belli.  Essi sono sparpagliati in un vasto parco ai piedi di un colle da cui si gode un’ottima vista della baia.  Sono pure stato al Cliff House, la ove principia lo stretto canale che congiunge la baia di San Francisco all’oceano.  Il panorama di lassu e stupendo perche da una parte il Pacifico con la sua costa bizzaramente frastagliata, dall’altra la baia coi monti che la circondano e di dietro le colline su cui e fondata San Francisco, offrono uno spettacolo incantevole.

Dearest Mother,

As you may have learned from a postcard scribbled on the train, Monday I finally left San Francisco and I’ve come south to Los Angeles, which I’ll probably leave tonight to go to Utah, where I’ll arrive in ten or twelve days, because I’ll stop a few days along the way.

But before leaving San Francisco I made a trip to Berkeley, across the bay to visit the University of California, Stanford’s rival.  The buildings are less grand than the ones in Palo Alto, but they are quite beautiful.  They are scattered in a large park at the foot of a hill where you can enjoy an excellent view of the bay.  I also went to the Cliff House, the point where the narrow channel of the San Francisco Bay connects to the ocean.  The view from up there is wonderful because from one side the Pacific coast is bizarrely jagged to the other, the bay with the mountains that surround it and behind the hills on which are the foundation of San Francisco, offer a spectacular sight.

This is how it goes, isn't it.  Everything ends before you know it.  You don't see it coming.  Today's post finishes up Camillo's letter of March 25, 1894.  It is the last that he wrote from Palo Alto.  I am sad.  It has been a good time to live in Palo Alto with my Great Grandfather.  I had no idea today would be the last one I'd be translating the words he wrote while he was here. 

I had set as a goal to finish translating his trip of 1893-1894 in early 2014.  So I knew the end was on the horizon--I just didn't realize it was this page.

So here it is, enjoy.  The next letter will be from Los Angeles.

Siccome bastan tre mesi di residenza in uno stato per ottenere la cittadinanza, cosi avvengono spesso trasmigrazioni temporanee di coppie mal assortite per ottener un divorzio.  Mi dicono anzi che lo stato di Nebraska ne fa addirittura una speculazione e ne fa una gran reclame, onde invitare i forestieri a venirsi a stabilire cola.

L’Elvira Fubini ha avuto il figliolo?  Son certo che e un maschio.  Tanti saluti a lei ed al marito.  Salutami tutti i conoscenti.

Since it takes three months residence in a state to obtain citizenship, unhappy couples frequently transmigrate temporarily to obtain a divorce.  They tell me that, indeed, the state of Nebraska has made a advertisement, inviting foreigners to come and settle that way.

Has Elivira Fubini had her son?  I’m certain it’s a boy.  Best wishes to her and her husband.  And good wishes to all of our friends.

Invece io mi sono persuaso che le donne maritate sono meno scapate che da noi e si occupano molto di piu della loro famiglia.  Non sapranno far la calza ma non importa; si occupano invece molto piu che da noi dell’istruzione dei figli, probabilmente perche la loro istruzione e assai superiore a quella delle loro sorelle europee (escludi le inglesi).  Del resto poi hanno la facilita del divorzio.  La legge del divorzio e differente pei differenti stati.  Per esempio credo che nello stato di New Jersey non esista il divorzio.  Invece California o nel Dakota e piuttosto facile ad ottenersi.

On the other hand, I’m convinced that the married women are less free than we are and that they worry more about their families.  They don’t know how to knit but that’s not important, instead they worry more than we do about the education of their children, and probably because of that their education is better than their european sisters (except for the english).  Outside of that there is the ease of getting a divorce.  The laws about divorce are different from state to state.  For example, I think in the state of New Jersey divorce doesn’t exist.  On the other hand in California or Dakota it’s pretty easy to get a divorce.

Vedresti che appena ritornata in patria troverebbe marito, cosa che le auguro di tutto cuore.  Del resto, comeche in America vi sien 5 or 6 per cento piu di umonini che non di donne, vi sono anche qui molte vecchie zitelle, soltanto che mentre da noi un a pudica verginella di 40 anni si fa scrupolo di escir sola per le vie o di andar a sentire una commedia un po arrischiata, qui invece le ragazze fin che non hanno marito se la godono quanto piu possono, godendo molto piu liberta nella lor vita da scapole che non quando sono maritare.

You’d see that as soon as she got home she would find a husband, which I hope with all my heart.  Moreover, in America there are about  5 or 6 percent more men than women, and there are many old maids here, only while we have chaste virgins at 40, who have qualms about going out alone in the streets or risking going to a comedy alone, here however, until they’re married girls enjoy themselves as much as they can, enjoying a lot more freedom in their lives [by blades than when I’m not married ?]
