Ho ricevuto una lettera di mamma con la notizia interessante sulla Fubini.  Mamma me la da come una notizia sbalorditiva, ma a me pare abbastanza naturale.  Quando una donna ha gli organi necessari e piu che naturale che ne vengan fuori dei marmocchi.

I received a letter from mamma with the interesting news about the Fubinis.  Mamma reported it as stunning news, but to me it seemed natural enough.  When a woman has the required bodies, it’s more than natural that they come out of brats?

24 dicember 1893 cont'd

Mi rincrebbe assai nel vedere quell’articolo riportato su un foglio italiano, prima di tutto perche falso o almeno scorretto, in quanto che mi affibbia il titolo di professore che non ho mai sognato di avere, e perche puo indurre gli amici che lo leggono a pensare che io rimarro in California tutta la vita e non sei o sette mesi soltanto, ed infine perche fara credere a tutti quelli che lo leggeranno che sono stato io a mandare quel numero della “Voce” alla “Gazzetta Piemontese”, con quanto giovamento alla mia riputazione tu lo puoi imaginare.  Io spero d’avere innanzi a me un sufficiente avvenire per non aver bisogno di veder riportati i panegirici di un giornalucolo in cerca di abbonati.  Tu non hai un idea di quanto solennemente io mi infischi di quello che possono dire i giornali sul conto mio.

I regretted seeing the article reported in an Italian paper, more than anything because it was false or at least incorrect, in that I’m saddled with the title of professor which I don’t dream of ever having, and because it could convince friends who read it to think that I’ll stay in California my whole life, not just six or seven months, and finally because it will make everyone who reads it think that it was me who sent the issue of the “Voce” to “Gazzetta Piemontese”, with what celebration of my reputation you can only imagine.  I hope people understand that I have no need to read eulogies about myself in a terrible journal looking for subscribers.  You have no idea how little I care about what they tell the newspapers about me.

Olivetti was founded in Ivrea, where my family is from, and where my uncle and cousin still live.  Like many places, Ivrea celebrates Carnevale in the week before Lent starts.  I'd like to go someday, but for now, I'll have to satisfy myself with these photographs from my uncle.  

The boxes of oranges are for a "war" that goes on, in which you get pelted with oranges if you are not wearing a red hat.  If anyone wants to comment on what that represents, I'd appreciate it.

PS Mi son scordato di scriverti che, quando mi mandasti i libri ed i compassi, la dogana mando ordine a Palo Alto di aprire i plichi in mia presenza e poi rispedirli ad essa a San Francisco per le constatazioni d’uso.  Pero con mia grande felicita i libri perche non scritti o stampati in inglese, ne i compassi perche usati d’uso personale (ferri del mestiere) ebbero a pagare nulla.  Sono stato molto contento di cio perche altrimenti avrei dovuto pagare non meno di due dollari (45% sul valore della merce) per i compassi.  Addio.

I forgot to write to you that when you sent me the books and compasses (?), customs send orders to Palo Alto to open in my presence and then to send them back to San Francisco to find out their use.  But, to my great happiness, the books, because they aren’t written or printed in English, nor the compasses (?) because they were for personal use (tools of the trade) I didn’t have to pay anything.  I was very happy with this because otherwise I would have had to pay no less than two dollars (45% the value of the goods) for the compasses.  Bye!

Pero non desidero che Tommasin venda tutto il vino, ma che ne conservi alquanto per gli usi della famiglia per due anni, e cio per non esser costretti a far la mala vita nel caso che l’anno venturo il raccolto fosse magro.  Ho ricevuto un cartolina di Piero a cui avevo risposto in precedenza.

But I don’t want Tommasin to sell all the wine, but save whatever is needed for the use of the family for two years, so that we won’t be forced to live an unhappy life next year in case the harvest is meager.  I received a postcard from Peter who had previously responded.

Ti pagherai di tutte queste spese e di altre che avrai da fare per me mediante gli affitti e denari delle granaglie e del vino.  A proposito, le mie congratulazioni un po’ tardive per la quantita del raccolto.   E i prezzi come sono, sono alti o bassi?  Se soltanto si potesse vendere il vino a L 15 la brenta, arebber piu di 2000 lire inseparte che verrebbero a irrorare il borselino.

You may pay for these expenses and the others coming up by the rents and by money raised from the grain and the wine.  And congratulations by the way, a little late, for the quantity of the harvest.  And the prices, are they high or low?  If only you could sell the wine at by the 15 L per brenta, that would be more than 2000 lire inseparate (?) that you would spray the borselino (?)

Prenditi nota del numero mancante e dopo scrivi alla redazione del giornale mandando lire 10 per rinnovazione dell’abbonamento e pregando ti mandino il numero arretrato che manca.  Tu poi mi farai il piacere di respingermi ogni 15 giorni il giornale dopo averlo legato con una funicella e con una fascia.  Manda 10 lire alla direzione dell’ “Elettricista” a Roma ma non respingermi i numeri.  Continuo l’abbonamento solo per incoraggiarne la pubblicazione.

Take note of the missing issues and then write to the newspaper sending 10 lire for renewal of the subscription and beg them to send the missing issues.  You could do me the pleasure of sending all fifteen days of the journal after having bound them with a cord and a band.  Send 10 lire to the attention of “Electrician” in Rome, but don’t send me the issues.  I continue to subscribe for the sole reason of encouraging the publication.
