Ho ricevuto la tua lettera, quella in cui mi parli del freddo e delle tue disgrazie domestiche di cui mi sono addolorato assai.  Si vede proprio che la California vale un po’ di piu che il nostro bel paese.

I received your letter in which you speak of the cold and your domestic misfortunes, which saddened me.  California is a bit warmer than our beautiful country.

PS  I think the Ring Series semi-fiasco in Milan had to do with not just the poor execution and staging, but also the non existent theatrical taste of the Milanese.

Ti spediro un giorno or l’altro anche una certa polvere fermento per mezzo della quale si posson fare dei biscotti (specie di panetti da caffe) molto buoni.  E necessario solo avere un forno ben caldo e devon esser mangiati subito.

One of these days I’ll also send you a kind of fermented flour with which you can make really good cookies and cakes.  You need a good hot oven and then you eat them right away.

From a letter written in January 1894

Ti dico una cosa che ti fara piacere.  Ho confezionato un astuccio in pelle di camoscio per i compassi, che cosi non si guastano.

Ricevo con un a certa regolarita i giornali, in media due volte alla settimana a mucchi di 7 o 8 insieme.  Vedo poi dai giornali americani che le cose in Italia si fanno sempre peggiori.

Sono stato un giorno a San Francisco che e attualmente imerso in un mare di fango.  Del resto a Palo Alto non si scherza ed in questa settimana in cui ha piovuto piuttosto mi e stato impossibile usufruire della bicicletta.  Del resto qui fa caldo come da noi a maggio, comeche al mattina la temperatura sia piu bassa.

I have something to tell you that you’ll enjoy.  I’ve packed up the compasses in suede so that they won’t fail.

I receive the newspapers pretty regularly, usually twice a week, but sometimes in a bunch of 7 or 8 at once.  Then I see in American newspapers that things in Italy keep getting worse.

I spent a day in San Francisco which in actuality was a sea of mud.  Moreover, I didn’t mess around in Palo Alto this week when it rained, making it impossible to use my bicycle.  Other than that, it is usually warm here, like in May for us, but the in the mornings the temperature is cooler.

Sono contento che ti sien piaciute le fotografie.  Quando ti avro spedite quelle di San Francisco sono certo che ti piaceremo ancor di piu.

I’m glad you liked the photographs.  When you receive the ones from San Francisco I’m sure you’ll like them even more.

Mi rincresce che Ivrea non abbia piu giornali cittadini, ma credo che sara per poco tempo.  Pensa che Palo Alto, che conta cinquecento abitanti e 2,000 contando l’universita ed i paesi vicini possiede uno quotidiano ed uno settimanale.

Mi sono sempre dimenticato di domandarti se Solaro ha sposato la Lamberti.

Ho visto che e morto un Durando.  Era il nostro falegname?

I regret that Ivrea doesn’t have more local newspapers, but I think it’s because people have little time.  I think that Palo Alto, that has 500 citizens and another 2,000 counting the university and local countryside, and it has a daily and a weekly.

I keep forgetting to ask you if Solaro has married Lamberti.

I saw that a Durando died.  Was it our carpenter?

Ieri to ho scritto una cartolina perche non stessi inquieta.  Oggi e la volta di un lettera, non molto lunga pero, perche e tardi.

Ho ricevuto la tua lettera del primo dell’anno in cui mi dai le society news d’Ivrea.

Yesterday I wrote you a postcard so you wouldn’t worry.  Today I have the time for a letter, not long though, because it’s late.

I received your letter from the first of the year in which you gave me the society news of Ivrea.
