Oggi intanto partiremo alla volta di Chicago ed arriveremo cola domani 16 a mezzogiorno. La spero ricevere notizie da casa. Questa lettera indirizzata a te si puo ritenere come indirizzata anche a tutta la famiglia e tu la manderai dopo letta a mamma che la fara leggere anche allo zio. Quando mi scriverete ricordateive di mettere lo stato in cui si trova la citta a cui indirizzate la lettera perche altimenti e impossibile che essa mi raggiunga.
Meanwhile, today we left ontime for Chicago and should arrive tomorrow around 4 in the afternoon. I hope to receive news from home. You and the family can hold onto this letter and use it for the address. You can send it to them after reading it to mamma and uncle. When you write to me, remember to include the state that the city is in when you address the letter, because otherwise it will be impossible for the letter to find me.

La mattina dopo partimmo alla volta di Washington prendendo un treno della compagnia della Pennsylvania. Il biglietto nell’unica classe da New York a Chicago via Washington-Pittsburgh costo 20 dollari e ci diede il diritto a fermarci 10 giorni a Washington e Pittpsburg. usufruendo di questa facolta ci siamo appunto fermati nella capitale degli Stati Uniti. Del mondo di viaggiare sulle ferrovie americane e di qello che abbiam fatoo a Washington e a Baltimora ti parlero un altro giorno.
The next morning we left ontime from Washington, taking a Pennsylvania company train. The first class ticket from New York to Chicago through Washington-Pittsburgh cost 20 dollars e enabled us to stop for 10 days in Washington and Pittsburgh. By using this kind of a ticket we were about to stop just in the capital of the United States. I’ll tell you all about the trip on the American trains and all about what we did in Washington and Baltimore some other day.

Giovedi ci recammo finalmente a visitare la famosa fabbrica di strumenti di precisione del signor Weston che mi ha lasciato un impressione sbalorditiva ed anch scoraggiante perche ho visto che non potro mai aver in italia neanco 1/10 di quel che occorree per poter mettere una fabbrica del genere. It direttore ci fece visitare minutamente ogni cosa fino ai minimi particolari e mi convinsi sempre piu che gli americani sono i primi meccanici del mondo. La sera fui occupato per la biografi di Ferraris e la passai col direttore del “Electrical World”. Tra l’alre cose interessanti che vedemmo in quei giorni vi fu la fabbrica di lampade ad incandescenza Edison a Neward, capace di costruire in un giorno 27,000 lampadine.
Thursday we finally visited Weston’s famous precision instrument factory--I was really impressed, stunned even, and also discouraged because in itally we don’t have 1/10 of what would be needed to create a factory like that. The director showed us everything in fine detail and I’m convinced that the Americans are the best mechanics [mechanical engineers?] in the world. In the evening I was busy with Ferraris’s biography and I spend the evening with the director of Electrical World. Among other interesting things that we’ve seen over the last few days was Edison’s light factory in Newark, which is able to produce 27,000 lights in a day.

Vi era tra l’altre cose una pantomima assai stupida che rappresentava un episodio della guerra di secessione. Una cosa da teatro di domenica sera con fucilazioni di spie, chariche di cavalleria, esplosioni di polveriere, etc, etc. Bisognava vedere con che entusiasmo quei newyorkesi applaudivan e si interesavano alla trama e che soddisfazione mostraronno alla fine, quando l’esercito del Nord pianto la bandiera sopra un forte del Sud. Il che dimostra ancora una volta che gli americani sono in certe cose ancor molto bambini.
Among other things there was a really stupid renactment of the civil war. A Sunday evening theater thing with rifles, spies, characters from the cavalry, gunpowder explosions, etc. We had to watch with the same enthusiasm as the New Yorkers who were applauding, who were so interested in the trauma, and whose satisfaction really showed at the end when the North flew their flag above the southern fort. One more time it showed us that in certain regards, americans are still rather childish.
Among other things there was a really stupid renactment of the civil war. Durante la giornata visitammo pure il building del giornale “World” dalla cui sommita si gode una bellissima vista a volo d’uccello di New York, della rada Brooklyn e New Jersey ed alla sera un battello ci trasporto a Coney Island che e un luogo di delizie e di spasso per i newyorkesi, distante un ¾ d’ora di battello dalla citta. La vi e un po’ di tutto: baracconi, alberghi, stabilimenti di bagni, teatrini, etc. Un vero paradiso per i bambini. La vedemmo in un’arena dei giochi d’artifizio che per verita non valevan molto ma che enthusiasmarono il nostro Ciceroni ed i buoni newyorkesi.
During the day we visited the “World” newspaper building, from the summit of which there is a beautiful birds eye view of New York. In the evening we took a boat to Coney Island, a place where New Yorkers go for fun and delights, which is about ¾ of an hour by boat from the city. There is a little bit of everything there--booths [rides?], bath houses, theatres, etc. A true paradise for kids. We saw a sports arena, that in reality wasn’t great but would have excited our Cicero and the good New Yorkers. [?]

Poscia andammo a vedere la compagnia telefonica su cui ti mandero un opuscolo che ti prego poscia restituirmi quando tornero. La vollero per forza che il professore ed io parlassimo col signor Gray, presidente del Congresso elettrico a Chicago, e cosi ho fatto conoscenza di questo messere a piu di 1000 chilometri di distanza. Non posso dire di conoscerlo di vista ma almeno lo conosco di parola. Del resto credo che in quei pochi giorni che rimasi a New York ho conosciuto piu di 1000 persone di cui naturalmente non ricordo ne nomi ne le fisionomie.
After going to visit the telephone company, that one I mailed you a brochure for, that I asked you to give back to me when I return home. This is how we met Signor Gray, president of the Electrical Congress in Chicago, and that’s how I met this person who is over 1,000 kilometers away. I can’t say I know him by sight, but at least I know him by his words. Over the last few days we’ve been in New York I’ve met more than a thousand people who I, naturally, don’t remember either by name or by face.

Prima pero di andar da Edison quel signor Hammer, che conosce mezza New York, ci porto a visitare degli impianti elettrici e le redazioni dei principali gironali d’elettricita, che ci accolsero gentilissimamente, anzi i direttore dell “Electrical World” il piu importante, mi incarico di tessere una biografia del Professore, lavoro che accettai ma che mi porto via tutti ritagli di tempo in questi giorni, ragione per cui non ho potuto scrivere a nessuno. Ora pero e finito e sara pubbicalto sopra un numero unico che uscira in occasione del Congresso.
Before leaving Edison, this Mr. Hammer, who knows half of New York, took us to visit the editors of the principal journals about electricity. They received us kindly, rather, the Director of Electrical World, the most important journal, tasked me with putting together a biography of the professor, work that I took on, but took me out for any shred of time I’ve had in the last few days, which is why I haven’t written to anyone in the last couple of days. Now, however, the work is done and has been published in a special edition that is coming out for Congress.

Alla sera per un malinteso ritornammo a New York mentre invece un certo signor Upton capo ingegnere della compangnia Edison ci aveva invitati a pranzo a casa sua a Orange, poco distante da Llewellin Park. Chiarito l’equivoco per telefono, tornammo ad Orange e pranzammo in casa di questo ingegnere Upton con la signora Upton, l’ing Hammer ed un altro signore. Il pranzo fu piuttosto cattivo e il prof. ferraris fu poi molto disgraziato perche non soltanto il menu era assolutamente contrario al suo gusto, ma i padroni parlavan cosi in fretta ed americamente l’inglese che egli non capi nulla della conversazione.
In the evening, there was a misunderstanding and we returned to New York even though a Mr. Upton, a chief engineer at Edison, had invited us to dinner at his home in Orange, not too far from Llewellin Park. We cleared things up over the phone and returned to Orange and had dinner at this Mr. Upton’s house, with Mrs. Upton, Hammer and a few other people. The meal was pretty terrible and afterward Prof Ferraris was [disappointed?] because it wasn’t just the menu that was totally not to his taste, but the hosts spoke so fast and in such American English that he didn’t understand a word of the conversation.
