I pompieri poi sono un corpo scelto assai benvoluto dalla popolazione. Essi sanno il loro mestiere e nessun altro se ne occupa cosicche non si ha qui quell’accorrer disordinato di gente volonterosa di portar soccorso che grida, che schiamazza, che fracassa tutto quato trova e che anticipa l’opera distruttrice del fuoco, sempre animata da buone intenzioni.

The firefighters are a well-liked group in the population. They know their job and no one else is dealing with, you don’t have the rushed disorder of volunteers bringing help, screaming and cackling, who finds and smashes everything in anticipation of the destructive work of the fire, always well-intentioned.

A little preview...I've been wondering when Camillo would end up in California. Currently on his trip he is planning a little more time in the midwest and then will head back after Ferraris to Italy. However, I snuck a peek ahead and the next letter begins "Dunque ho cambiato completamente itinerary..." Well, I've changed my itinerary completely!

Quando capita un incendio chiunque puo, per messo di una manovella, trasmetter dall’avvisatore piu vicino l’avviso alla stazione centrale. Questa da direttamente l’avviso di pronti alle stazioni che si credono le piu adatte per mezzo di un apparecchio che da anche il numero dell’avvisatore da cui e partita la domanda di soccorso. Immediatamente per mezzo di un congegno comandato dal capo stazione, le porte dei boxes si aprono ed i cavalli che sono stati a cio ammeastrati corrono a porsi a lato del timone del veicolo a cui devon esser attaccati. Nel frattempo i pompieri si vestono (se per caso fosser a dormire) e i finimenti cadono amtomaticamente sui cavalli e vengono immideiatamente affibbiati, e tutto e pronto per la partenza.

This directly sends the notice to the stations that they think are the best able to help based on the number and the neighborhood from which the notice was sent. Immediately, a device commanded by the central station, directs the doors of the boxes to open. And the horses that are trained to run move themselves to the side of the vehicle they need to be on. Meanwhile, the firemen get dressed (if they were, by chance, sleeping) and the harnesses drop down automatically on the horses and are instantly buckled--and everyone is ready to go.

Ordinariamente le stazioni che ricevon l’avviso di star pronte sono molto numerose mentre pero solo due o tre ricevon dopo pochi secondi l’avviso della partenza e la designazione della localita estatta dell’incendio. Dal momento in cui ricevon il primo avviso all’instante in cui la pompa la scala e gli accessori si incamminano non intercede in genere mai pui di 15 secondi, il che e semplicemente meraviglioso.

Ordinarily a lot of stations receive the alert to get ready, however, sometimes two or three others receive the alert a couple of seconds after the departure, and that depends on the exact location of the fire. From the moment the the first alert is received to the pump, the ladder, and the accessories are on their way is, in general, never more than 15 seconds, it is simply miraculous!

Se gli incendi comeche disastrosi non brucian tutta una citta (come del resto e capitato a Chicago stessa nel ‘71 quando un incendio distrusse 17.500 edifici) si deve, io credo alla perfetta oranizzaaione servizio dei pompieri. Le stazioni dei pompieri sono enormemente numerosi e situate in tutti i punti della citta. In ogni stazione vi e una grande pompa a vapore (alle volte due) con caldaia spempre a pressione, un carro portante una scala, un carro per i tubi e gli accessori del pompe. Due cavalli per ogni veicolo sono chiusi in appositi boxes vicino ai veicoli a cui sono adibiti e non sono ordinariamente bardati. Numersoissimi avvisatori d’incendio sono sparsi in ogni punto della citta e cosi pure numerosissime sono le bocche da fuoco.

If the fires, however disastrous, don’t burn down the whole city (as, indeed, happened in Chicago in ‘71 when a fire destroyed 17,500 buildings) its because, you have, I think the perfect fireman’s organization. The fire stations are huge and numerous, and located throughout the city at every point. In each station there is a big steam pump (sometimes two) with a boiler that’s always at pressure, a wagon that carries a ladder, a wagon for the hoses and the pump accessories. Two horses for each vehicle are kept in special “boxes” near vehicles and are not harnessed in the ordinary way. Numerous fire alarms are scattered all over the city and there are just as many fires.

Cosi per esempio tre settimane fa un incendio distrusse piu di 40 case a sud Chicago e la soca parve la piu naturale del mondo. Del resto gli incendi sono all’ordine del giorno nelle citta americane e cio non deve stupire qualora si pensi ch i 95/100 delle case sono fatte qui di solo legno, e che nella construzione di esse non entra in genere neppure un mattone ne altra materia in combustible.

Like this for example, three weeks ago a fire destroyed more than 40 houses in South Chicago and it seemed the most natural thing in the world. Fires are common in all the cities, and its not surprising considering that 95/100 of the houses are made of wood only, and in the building of the houses no one ever gives a thought to other incombustible materials.

Gli abitanti in genere sono americanamente gentili, cioe di quell a gentilezza cordiale, ma molto da villan piu o meno rifatto. Hanno poi un’imperturbabilita ammirevole. Pochi giorni or sono un treno fu assalutato e derubato nelle vicinanze della citta da una banda di ladri che rubaran quanto poterono. Ieri e ieri l’altro si ebbero scontri ferroviari con morti e feriti. Da noi se ne parlerebbe per un mese con ricriminazioni sui giornali, dimostrazioni etc. Invece qui nessuno se ne da per inteso.

The people, in general, are American cordial, that is the kind of cordiality that is more or less imitated by the villan. The end up having an admirable imperturbability. A few days a go a train was robbed and was greeted in the vicinity of the city by a gang of thieives who steal when they can. Yesterday and the day before yesterday there were clashes with rail deaths and injuries. For us, we would talk about it for a month with recriminations in newspapers, demonstrations, etc. But here nobody pays heed.

Non che non vi sieno anche a Chicago, indipendentemente dalla sua Esposizione, delle belle cose. Tutt’altro: i suoi parchi sono enormi ed alcuni bellissimi; ha in genere strade larghe comeche orribilimente tenute, ha edi fici in gnere di cattivo gusto ma molte volte imponenti per dimensioni. Questa delle dimensioni e una mania propriamente americana. La frase: “Largest in the world” e una delle frasi favorite dei yankees che la adoperano a torto ed a ragione, per dritto e per traverso.

Not that there aren’t beautiful things in Chicago. Completely opposite: its parks are huge and each of them is very beautiful; in general it has wide roads, even if they are paved horribly, it has buildings that are often tacky but impressive because of their dimensions. This thing with the dimensions is a really american mania. The phrase “largest in the world” is one of the yankees favorite phrases, wrong or right, they use it coming and going.

Mi son ricordato di questa storiella ieri mattina quando dopo un ottimo viaggio di 14 ore sono arrivato a Minneapolis, una graziosa citta di 160,000 abitanti, pittorescamente situata sul Mississippi che pero qui non e ancora quel gran fiume navigabile che tutti conoscono. Mi sono ricordato di questa storiella perche confrontando Chicago con tutte le altre citta che finora ho visto negli Estati Uniti trovo che la metropoli dell’Illinois non e certo la piu simpatica.

I remembered this joke yesterday morning when after a perfect 14 hour trip, I arrived in Minneapolis, a gracious city of 160,000 people, situated in a picturesque location on the Mississippi, but here, its not yet the huge navigable river that everyone knows. I remembered this story because compared to all the other cities that I’ve seen up til now in the US, I find the great city of Illinois is not exactly the nicest.
