Io ne feci una gran parte in bicicletta, ma mi stancai alquanto.  Moltissimi la fanno in carrozza, pochi a piedi.  Come tutte le strade di montagna carrozzabili essa e assai sinuosa.  Negli ultimi 11 chilometri mi dicono che essa fa 365 svoltate.  Arrivai un po prima delle due allo Smith Creek ove vi sono alcune case ed un albergo.  La feci colazione o per meglio dire divorai tutto quello che mi portarono, essendo morto di fame.

I went most of the way by bicycle, but I got a little tired.  Many go make the trip in a carriage and some walk.  Like all vehicular mountain roads this one was is pretty winding.  In the last 11 kilometers I’d say it revolves 365 degrees.  I arrived a little before two at Smith Creek where there are a few houses and a hotel.  I made breakfast there, or rather I devoured everything I brought, I was dying of hunger.

La strada che vi conduce e assai bella, ma lunga (42km), e ripida specialmente dopo i primi dieci chilometri.

The street that takes you there is nice enough, but long, and steep especially after the first ten kilometers.

L’osservatorio fu fondato qualche anno or sono mediante un legato di 700,000 dollari lasciati da un certo Lick a tale scopo.  Esso giace sulla sommita di un monte (1400 m sopra il livello del mare) (monte Hamilton) che domina tutti i circostanti picchi di una piccola catena di montagne che segue la costa del Pacifico ed e quasi avanguardi a dell’altra piu grandiosa nota sotto il nome di Sierra Nevada.  Da noi forse ci avrebbero costruito un fortino.  Gli americani, piu practici, ci costruiron un osservatorio astronomico.

The observatory was founded a few years ago from a grant of 700,000 dollars left by a certain Lick for this purpose.  It lies on the summit of a mountain (1400 meters above sea level) (Mount Hamilton) that dominates all the surrounding peaks of a small change of mountains that follows the Pacific that is a little bit forward of the other grander range that goes by the name Sierra Nevada.  If it were up to us we’d probably built a fort.  But the Americans are more practical, the built an astronomical observatory.

San Jose e una piccola citta a sud di San Francisco, assai graziosa e popolata di ville e di giardini.  Ha qualcosa d’una grande citta per le sue vie ampie e ben lastricate (cosa strana in America), pei suoi negozi eleganti per i tramways elettrici che la solcano per lungo e per largo.  A San Jose passai la notte in un albergo modesto si nelle apparenze che nel prezzo.  Al mattino all’alba delle 10 mi incamminai per il mio lungo viaggio che mi doveva portare ad osservare la luna attraverso il piu grande telescopio a lenti ora esistente.

San Jose is a small city south of San Francisco, very pretty and populated by villas and gardens.  It has some qualities of a big city, its streets are wide and well paved (a strange thing in America), its elegant stores, and its electric tram that plows far and wide.  In San jose I spent the night in a hotel that was modest in price and appearance.  In the morning, at dawn I made my way in the long voyage I had to take to observe the moon in the largest telescope lense in existence.

We are back from summer vacation and I'm back at the translation.  Continuing a letter from March 20th, 1894.

Il vento soffiava ed io volavo quasi senza accorgermene, trasportato dal mobile elemento.  Non ho mai provato come quella sera la felicita di una corsa sfrenata.  Ti basti il dire che dopo un’ora ed un quarto ero arrivato a San Jose, a 30 chilometri da Palo Alto.

The wind was blowing and almost without realizing it I was transported by the moving element.  I’ve never felt so happy as that night during that wild ride.  Suffice it to say that after an hour and a quarter I arrived in San Jose, 30km from Palo Alto.

Mamma carissima

Ieri ti ho scritto una cartolina per prometterti una lettera.  Ora la lettera arriva...oh se arriva e sara tanto lunga che non so se potrai leggerla tutta d’un fiato.

Dunque prima di lasciare Palo Alto ho pensato di andare a far una gita al Lick Observatory, che si trova ad una settantina di chilometri da Palo Alto.

Sono partito venerdi sera alle 8 1/2 da Palo Alto, io e la mia bicicletta in ottimo stato.  La strada era bellissima e ben illuminata da una luna quasi piena, i cui raggi si irradiavano in un’atmosfera purificata da un fortissimo vento che soffiava alle mie spalle.

Mother dearest,

Yesterday I wrote you a postcard promising you a letter.   And now the letter arrives...or if it arrives it may be so long that you can’t read it all at once.

Well, before leaving Palo Alto I thought to make a trip to see Lick Observatory which is about seventy kilometers from Palo Alto.

I left Friday around 8:30 from Palo Alto, my bicycle and I in fine form.  The road was beautiful and well lit by a moon that was almost full whose rays radiated in an atmosphere purified by a strong wind that blew at my shoulders.
