Immense sono le miniere di questa regione e non e da meravigliare se in pochi anni (20 circa) sorsero in questo stato citta ricche e populated come Helen e Butte.  Io vidi solo pero la prima di queste due citta.  Essa si vanta d’esser la citta piu ricca del mondo avuto ragione della sua grandezza.  All’Esposizione di Chicago il Montana esponeva, oltre che innumerevoli camioni di minerali, una statua massiccia d’argento di grandezza naturale con un bsamento pure massiccio d’oro.  Essa raffigurava la giustizia e si poteva percio dire che la giustizia di Montana e basta sull’oro.  Ad Helena alloggio in un albergo elegante (3 ½ dollari con vitto) e mi fermai un giorno solo.

There are immense mines in this region and its no wonder that in just a few years cities as rich and populated as Helena and Butte arose.  I only had the chance to see the first of these two cities.  It boasts of being the richest city in the world.  At the Chicago Exposition Montana exhibited, a massive life sized silver statue with a massive base of pure gold.  It was a figure of justice, and you could say in Montana gold is justice.  In Helena I took a room in an elegante hotel (3 ½ dollars with board) and I only stopped for one day.

Dopo aver pernottato a Livingston (1600 km da St. Paul -- 2800 m sul livello del mare) mi diressi verso Helena (Montana).  Mi son dimenticato di direti che nel viaggio (36 ore) da St. Paul a Livingston ho traversato parte dello stato di Minnesota ricco in legno e prodotti agricoli, e tutto lo stato di Nord Dakota dalle interminabili praterie, dai campi ricchi di frumento e biade.  Dopo son entrato nello stato di Montana di cui Helena e la capitale.  Lo stato di Montana e forse quello che ha dato piu oro argento e rame.

After arriving in Livingston (1600 km da St. Paul -- 2800 meters above sea level), I headed toward Helena (Montana).  I forgot to tell you that over the trip (36 hours) from St. Paul to Livingston I crossed part of the saty of Minnesota rich in wood, agricultural products, and all of the state of North Dakota from the interminable grasslands, and farms of wheat and corn.   Then I entered the State of Montana, where Helena is the capital.  The state of Montana may be the one with the most gold, silver and copper.

La visitai alcuni geyser, alcune bellissime incrostazioni calcaree depositate dalle acque bollenti e alla sera me ne andai a letto deciso a partire il giorno dopo alle 6 per la mia seconda tappa.  Ma forse la stagione era un po’ troppo avanzata e quando me siegliai un palmo di neve era caduta sul suolo ed altra ancora continuava a cadere.  Allora ho cambiato piano e alle due presi una diligenza che non molte scosse ed un dollaro e mezzo m riporto a Cinabar, donde presi il treno per Livingston.  Sono stato molto contento di non aver spesi i sessanta dollari per la diligenza che molto euforicamente chiamano stage perche in tal maniera si e obbligati a vedere quello che voglion gli altri, non quello che piace a noi.  Inoltre, stante il cattivo tempo, probabilmente poco si sarebbe potuto vedere se pur il viaggio fosse stato possibile.

There I visited a few geysers, a few beautiful limestone deposits that formed from the boiling water, and in the evening I went to bed and decided I’d leave at 6 for my second round.  But maybe the season was a little too advanced because when I woke up a hand of snow had fallen and more was falling.  So I changed my plan and at two I took a [diligence?] with lots of kicks and shocks, which for a dollar and a half carried me to Cinabar, where I took the train back to Livingston.  I was very pleased that I didn’t spend seventy dollars for the [diligence] which is very euphorically called a stage, because in this way you’re obligated to visit whatever the group wants to see, and not what we would like to see.  Moreover, given the bad weather, probably little could have been seen, even if the journey had been possible.

Attratto dunque dalle descrizioni di questo Yellowstone Park io abbandonai martedi St Paul e presi il treno per Livingston da cui si diparte una diramazione di ferrovia che porta vicino ai limiti del parco.  Lasciai il baule con entro la valigia a Livingston, piccolo villaggio rinomato per  esser luogo di convengo per i cacciatori che trovan nei dintorni alci orsi cervi cigni etc, e con un a camicia e qualche altro oggetto avvoltolato nell’impermeabile e nella coperta, mi in camminai pel mil viaggio servendomi della ferrovia fin che potei e delle gambe per i tredici chilometri che vengon dopo.  Arrivai verso le 3 ad un albergo ben situato su di un altipiano in mezzo ad alture e la mi fermai con l’intenzione di proseguire il giorno dopo.

Attracted by the descriptions of this Yellowstone Park I abandoned St. Paul on Tuesday and took the train to Livingston that departed on a branch of the railroad that took me close to the limits of the park.  I left my trunk, with my suitcase inside, in Livingston, a small town renowned by hunters who find lots of moose, bears, deer and geese in the surrounding area, and with a shirt and a couple of other things curled up in my raincoat and blanket, I started my voyage making use of the railroad for as long as I could and the continuing by foot for thirteen kilometers after that.  Around three I arrived at a hotel that was well situated on a plateau in the midst of hills and I stopped there with the intention of continuing the next day.

My brother is building a prototype of a new bike.  This is a recent joint that he welded.

Pero lo Yellowstone Park e una delle meraviglie dell’America e siccome non e molto grande ed e fornito di buoni hotels decisi di farlo a piedi.  E lo Yellowstone Park una regione in gran parte nello stato di Wyoming, situata a considerevole altezze sul livello del mare.  La la natura pare abbia voluto concentrare una copia enorme di bellezze e di fenomeni naturali, perche cola trvansi valli e monti e cascate di fiumi e geyser (vulcani d’aqua bollente) e sorgenti minerali e depositie calcarei e foreste pietrificate, un insieme insomma di circostanze che rendon il luogo dei piu interessanti.  Il Governo poi degli Stati Uniti ha decretato che questo territorio e proprieta della nazione e nessuno vi puo fabbricare case ne abbattere alberi ne scavare monti ne cacciare animali, cosicche esso rappresenta anche cio che era l’America allo stato naturale.

However, Yellowstone Park is one of the wonders of America and since it’s not very big or euquipped with good hotels, I decided to go by foot.  And Yellowstone Park is a region mostly in the state of Wyoming, located at considerable altitude.  There the nature seems to have wanted to concentrate on making an enormous copy (collection) of natural beauties and phenomena, because there you’ll find valleys and mountains, and waterfalls, and geysers, mineral deposits, limestone deposits and petrified forests, a set of circumstances in short, that have created one of the most interesting places.  The US Government has declared that this territory is property of the nation and no one may build houses, hotels, nor excavate mountains or hunt animals so this also represents America in its natural state.

Onde ho pensato di scrivere a Chicago perche mi estendessero la lettera di credito ad una banca di St. Paul.  Essi invece mi risposero che non avendo corrispondenti nel Minnesota non ptoevan farlo, cosi io mi rimasi coi mie 85 dollari dovetti smetter l’idea di far lo Yellowstone Park in carrozza e cio fu un gran bene, come vedri dopo.

I was going to write to Chicago so they could extend me a letter of credit for a bank in St. Paul.  Instead they told me that without having connections in Minnesota already, they would not be able to do that, and so I was left with my 85 dollars and needed to put a halt to the idea of doing Yellowstone in a carriage, and this ended up being a good thing, as you’ll see in a minute.

Carissima mamma,
Questa che e passata e stata per me una settimana campale. Basti dire che io ero una settimana fa a 3000 chilometri di distanza da Pacifico ed ora sono sulla costa di questo oceano. Ma per non fare confusione e meglio che io ti narri tutto quanto accadde dopo che ti ho scritto l’ultima lettera da St. Paul. Io rimasi a St. Paul fino a martedi ed eccoti la ragione di questo lungo soggiorno. Devi sapere che dopo pagato il biglietto mi rimaso in tasca circa 85 dollari ed ho pensato che sarebbe stato un po prudente aver qualcosa in saccoccia di piu, tanto piu che avevo intenzione di far in carrozza il giro dello Yellowstone Park che costa da solo 60 dollari, ed inoltre capivo che era necessario spender almeno una decina di dollari per lo sleeping-car e avevo intenzioni di fermarmi almeno dodici o quindici giorni per le citta, onde realmente 85 dollari non eran sufficienti per arrivare a San Francisco ove potro esigere altri denari.

Dear mamma,
This past week has been, for me, an epic week (?). It’s enough to say that a week ago I was 3,000 kms away from the Pacific and now, I’m on the coast of that ocean. But, so as not to confuse you, it’s better that I tell you everything that’s happened after I last wrote you in St. Paul. I stated in St. Paul until Tuesday and this is the good sense of this long sojourn. You need to know that after I paid for my ticket, I still had in my pocket about 85 dollars and I thought that it would be prudent to have a little more in my pocket, enough so that I could go by carriage to Yellowstone which costs only about 60 dollars, and I was pretty sure that I would be spending at least a dozen for the sleeping car and I planned to stay at least twelve or fifteen days per city, and so realistically 85 dollars wasn’t enough for me to get to San Francisco where I could withdraw more money.

Ho pensato allora che sarebbe stato bellissimo prender alloggio in quei paraggi e con un po’ di faccia franca suono il campanello del primo cottage che vedo. Mi vien ad aprire un giovanotto ed il tranquillo tranquillo gli dico che mi avevano detto che in quel villino vi eran stanze d’affitare. Egli disse che era vero, ma che non le affittava per meno di un mese, ma che se io fosse andato tre porte piu innanzi avrei trovato quello che mi occorreva. Vado alla porta indicatami e ripeto la commedia. Mi viene ad aprire una signorina attempatella che mi disse che avrebbe potuto darmi unal bella stanza con gabinetto da toilette per 75 centesimi (di dollari) al giorno compreso il breakfast al matino.

Visto che la casa era pulita e la stanza assai bella ho accettato ed eccomi per due o tre giorni installato in una Yankee Home. Stamani a colazione ho visto le altre persone della casa che paion abbastanza per bene. Come son pentito di non aver fatto lo stesso a Chicago!

Well, I thought it would be fine to stay in this area, and with a little “faccia franca” I rang the doorbell of the first cottage I saw. A young boy came to open the door and quietly quietly tell him that someone told me there were rooms to rent in this house. It’s true he said, but we only rent for a month, but if I went three doors down I’d find what I was looking for. I went to the door he told me about and repeated the comedy. A young lady came to greet me at the door [attempatella] and told me that she could give me a nice room with a bathroom for 75 cents a day complete with breakfast in the morning.

I could see that the house was clean and the room was nice enough and so I accepted and there I was for two or three days staying in a Yankee home. In the morning at breakfast I saw the other people of the house who seem nice enough. How sorry am I to not have done the same in Chicago!

Il Vaporino, lasciato il forte, si incammino tranquillamente verso St. Paul. Con noi viaggiavanno anche, trasportati dalla corrente, migliaia e migliaia di tronchi che vanno alle segherie di St. Paul e ogni tanto bisognava fermarsi per respingerne qualcuno. Finalmente si arrivo a St. Paul che si presenta ottimamente comeche meno bene di Minneapolis.

Dopo preso terra domando al primo individuo che trovo: Qual e la parte piu elegante della citta? St. Anthony Hill mi rispose. E come si fa ad andarci? Prenda il car della quarta strada. All right, grazie e mi avvio e prendo il car della quarta strada. Mi fermo alla sommita del St. Anthony Hill e trovo che il mio cicerone aveva perfettamente ragione perche questa parte, la parte alta della citta, e piena di villini assai eleganti.

The boat left the fort and we tranquilly approached St. Paul. Along with us, thousands and thousands of tree trunks were being transported by current to the sawmills of St. Paul. Every once in awhile we had to stop to push some out of the way. Finally we arrived in St. Paul, which appeared to be quite nice, though less so thank Minneapolis.

After taking land I asked the first person I saw: Which is the most elegant part of the city? St. Anthony, he told me. And how do you get there? Take the car that runs on the fourth street. “All right” thanks alot, I start out and take the car on the fourth street. I stop at the summit of St. Anthony Hill and found that my “cicero” was perfectly correct, because this part, the highest part of the city, is full of very elegant villas.
