E poi ora so per esperienza che se la mi andra male vi e sempre un’America ove un individuo non cretino puo sempre trovare a farsela bene.  Veramente tutto questo che ti dico e un po’ prematuro, ma non importa.

And now I know first hand that if it goes badly for me, there is always an America where an individual who’s not a cretin can always figure out how to do well.  Really, everything that I’m saying is a little premature, but no matter.

Well folks, every time I feel like I have just about had it with this project, that I am on a very slow path that is leading exactly nowhere, Camillo gives me one of these to keep me going.  As if he is speaking to me directly, sometimes, in whispered notes across time....Thanks to him for going for it to "faccio una bestialita" whatever that means.  I can only imagine what this colorful italian-ism means, and invite better italian speakers send their favorite translation of this phrase.

Se la rendita non avra allora un crollo maggiore dell’attuale, intendo vendre tutta la mia e intendo impiegarla nella fabbrica che sto progettando fin d’ora.  So che tutti indistinamente diconon che faccio un bestialita e forse sara vero, ma io non sono di questo parere.

If the annuity hasn’t lost much of its actual value, I intend to sell my whole portion and to use that for the factory that I am planning as of now.  I know that absolutely everyone says that I’m going to “faccio una bestialita” and maybe they’re right, but I am not of this opinion.

Le mie intenzioni sono per ora le seguenti.  Mese maggio verso il 20 partenza da Palo Alto e a piccole tappe viaggio fino a New York (un mese e mezzo).  Partenza per l’Europa, fermata a Liverpool e alcune citta dell’Inghilterra che non ho ancor visto.  Fermata a Parigi per la stessa ragione e verso la fin d’agosto faccio conto di esser ad Ivrea.

My intentions for now are the following.  In the month of May, close to the 20th, I’ll depart Palo Alto and by small steps I’ll travel out to New York (a month and a half).  I depart for Europe, stopping in Liverpool and a few English cities that I haven’t seen yet.  I’ll stop in Paris for the same reason, and near the end of August I assume I’ll be in Ivrea.

Avevo dapprima creduto che fosse stato Carlo a far notare quell’articolo alla “Piemontese”, ma poi ier l’altro ho saputo che e stato il dottor Devecchi che mi ha reso questo non desiderato servizio.   Mercoledi e giovedi sono stato a San Francisco e ora ritornato a Palo Alto.  Ho ricevuto una lettera da Finzi che e tornato per alcuni mesi a Milano, donde forse l’anno venturo partira per stabilarsi negli Stati Uniti.

At first I thought Carlo sent the article to the “Piemontese”, but the other day I learned that it was Dr. Devecchi who delivered this unwanted service.  Wednesday and Thursday I was in San Francisco and now I’ve returned to Palo Alto.  I received a letter from Finzi who has been back in Milan for a couple of months,  perhaps next year he will move to the United States.

Carissima mamma,

Ho ricevuto l’ultima tua lettera e tutti i giornali che mi si sono inviati da Ivrea, e tra gli altri quelli in cui si riportavoano certe parole che un giornale a corto di abbonati aveva pubblicato sul mio conto.  Mi e rincresciuta abbastanza questa pubblicazione della “Piemontese”, che fa credere ad una mia intenzione di piantare radici in California, cosa che non ho intenzione di fare, e ad un professorato che non e mai esistito essendo semplicemente assistente.

I received your last letter and all the newspapers that were sent to me from Ivrea, including the one short on subscribers that reported certain words about me.  They’ve inflated me, this publication “Piemontese” that makes one think that one of my intentions is to plant roots in California, which I have no intention of doing, that I’ve become a professor, a fact which has never existed, I’m just an assistant.

Emma ha ricevuto l’album di Chicago?  Le e piaciuto?  Quest’anno non sono stato molto generoso per Natale, essendo un po’ molto sbilanciato.  Ora sono in vacanza, ma continuo ad andare regolarmente a fare i miei esperimenti in laboratorio.  Oggi piove ma non fa freddo.  Come volentieri manderei un po’ del mio caldo in casa vostra!

Fra qualche giorno faro una scappata a San Francisco dove e da piu di un mese che non sono stato.

Ricevuta lettera scritta il 6.   Quanto alla storia sono anch’io del tuo parere riguardo alla storia delle idee, costumi etc., ma qella che credo inutile e la sequela di guerre, paci, regni etc che forma tutta la storia che s’insegna nelle scuole.

Did Emma receive the album from Chicago?  Did she like it?  This year I wasn’t very generous for Christmas, being a little [unbalanced...maybe overspent?].  Right now I’m on vacation, but I continue to do my experiments in the laboratory.  Today it’s raining, but not cold.  How I wish I could send a little of my heat to your house!

In a couple of days I’m going to make a run up to San Francisco where I haven’t been in more than a month.

I received the letter written on the 6th.  As for history, I share your opinin about the history of ideas, customs, etc.  But what I think is useless is the sequence of war, peace, treaties and kingdoms that form all of the history that’s taught in school.
