Il pover’omo s’accorge un po’ tardi d’aver giocata un attiva carta e grida e strepita e prega, ma le altre lo tengon sospeso fino a che egli promette di abolire l’editto causa di tanto male.

Che te ne pare?  Se non e vera e ben trovata, ed e certamente consona allo spirito delle ragazze americane, che anche in questo valgon molto e molto di piu che le europee.  Gia se fossi in te manderei Maria a compiere la sua educazione in America.

The poor man realizes a bit too late that he’s been [giocata un attiva carta--is this an idiom?] played and he screams and cries and begs, but the girls keep him suspended until he promises to abolish the evil rule that caused all the trouble.

What do you think?  If it’s not true it’s well found, and it’s certainly in keeping with the spirit of American girls, who even in this [valgon?] are much much more than european girls.  Yes, if I were you, I’d send Maria to America for her education.

The girls pulled him up, but in the middle of the way they realized the trap.  What did they do.  The decided to do nothing and left the rector suspended in the air.

Oggi e Pasqua, almeno cosi dicono e cosi pare che sia.  Non so se l’era pasquale ha un’azione debilitante sul cervello, ma e certo che il mio cervello quest’oggi e molto debilitato perche non so metter insieme due righe una dopo l’altra.

Per compensarti di questa mia ocaggine, nella prossima lettera a mamma ed a te parlero a lungo di San Francisco, di Los Angeles e di gli altri paesi che avro visitato.

Oggi ti raccontero una bella storiella capitata, dicono, in un collegio femminile dell’Est.  In questo collegio, come in tanti altri, le ragazze avevan l’abitudine di ricevere i giovanotti fino pare ad ora molto tarda che il rettore mando un ukase in cui proibiva alle ragazze di ricever viste dopo le 9 ½ di sera.  Le ragazze non se ne diedero per inteso, ma siccome alle 9 ½ le porte eran chiuse, esse pensaron di fissare alle loro finestre delle carrucole e di tirar su i giovanotti entro dei cesti.  Pare che il rettore avesse sentore di cio, perche penso di sorprender la sua tribu e si mise egli stesso a tal fine nel canestro.

Today is Easter, at least that’s what they say and that’s what it seems to me.  I don’t know if Easter has a debilitating effect on the brain, but it’s certain that my brain is very dibilitated today because I can’t seem to put one line together after another.

To compensate you for this stupidity, in the next letter to mom and you, I’ll speak at length about San Francisco, Los Angeles and the other places where I’ll have been.

Today I’ll tell you a good story that happened at a women’s college in the East, they say.  In this college, like in most of the others, the girls were in the habit of receiving young men so late into the night that the rector had to make a rule that the girls would be forbidden to receive young men after 9:30 in the evening.  The girls didn’t entirely understand, but since it was 9:30 and the doors were closed they thought to fix their windows with pulleys and brought up the young men in boxes.  The rector had heard of this, so he thought to surprise his tribe by climbing himself into one of these chests.

Carissima Emma,

Sono ancora per 4 o 5 giorni a Palo Alto.  Dopo ripigliero le mie peregrinazioni e finalmente ritornero in Europa.

Quest’estate hai intenzione di passarla al Ciabot?  Spero di si.  Ti rivolgo cosi a bruciapelo questa domanda perche tu non mi hai risposto in proposito.  La risposta la ricevero spero, a Salt Lake City (Utah) ove trovero una quantita di lettere fermo in posta.  La trovero anche una gran quantita di mogli disoccupate perche, come saprai, tra i mormoni vigeva il pligamismo che ora invece e stato abolito, se non di fatto, almeno in apparenza.

I’m in Palo Alto for 4 or 5 more days.  After I leave, I’ll retrace my wanderings and then finally I’ll return to Europe.

This summer do you plan to visit Ciabot?  I hope so.  I’m asking you this so point blank because you didn’t answer me.  I hope to receive the answer in Salt Lake City where I’ll find a bunch of letters stopped in the mail.  I’ll also find a bunch of unemployed wives because, as you know, polygamy prevailed among the Mormons, but now it’s been abolished, if not in fact at least in appearance.

Avevo intenzione di passare parte della domenica allo Smith Creek, ma al mattino vedendo il cielo rannuvolarsi pensai bene di prender il mio cavallo e di partire.  Come puoi immaginare la discesa fu meno faticosa della salita, comeche avessi un po da fare per impedire alla macchina di prender la mano, non volendo usare del freno che in case di assoluto bisogno per paura di guastare le gomme.  A San Jose presi la ferrovia e me ne tornai a Palo Alto.

Non ho ancora deciso il giorno in cui lascero Palo Alto.  Probabilmente nella prima settimana di aprile.

Ecco ti il mio itinerario soggetto a mutazioni.  San Francisco -- Los Angeles --Forse San Diego scendendo cosi al sud fino al confine messicano -- Un tentativo di vista alla Yosemite Valley che sara probabilmente mandato a monte dalle neve -- Sacramento -- Reno (Nevada) Ogden (Utah) Salt Lake City (Utah) Denver (Colorado) Kansas City (Kansas) St. Louis (Missouri)

I had planned to spend part of Sunday in Smith Creek, but in the morning I saw that the sky was starting to cloud over and thought it better to take my horse [recall, he’s actually riding a bike, so this is a bit of a funny joke]  and head out.  As you can imagine the descent was less strenuous than the ascent, however there was a little work to do to prevent the bike from getting too carried away, because I didn’t want to use the brakes unless absolutely necessary for fear of ruining the tires.  In San Jose I took the train and headed back to Palo Alto

I still haven’t decided what day I will leave Palo Alto.  Probably in the first week of April.

Here is my itinerary subject to change.  San Francisco--Los Angeles--Maybe San Diego, heading as far south as the mexican boarder--A tentative visit to Yosemite Valley where there will probably covered in snow --Sacramento--Reno (Nevada) Ogden (Utah) Salt Lake City (Utah) Denver (Colorado) Kansas City (Kansas) St. Louis (Missouri)

Today's translation stumped me in a couple of places. If anyone wants to give feedback, I'd welcome it.

La carrozza (privata) era un buggy, veicolo leggero in cui si sta comodamente in sei, ed era tirata da due superbi cavalli che volavano.  La corsa fu addirittura emozionante perche il rapido pendio, le innumerevoli svoltate, i precipizi ed i burroni che fiancheggiavan la via, la rapidita della corsa potevan appagare qualunque cercatore di emozioni.  Ed io fui realmente appagato ed assai soddisfatto.  Giunto all’albergo dello Smith Creek io dicesi e gli altri proseguiron per San Jose.

The carriage (private was a buggy),  a light-weight vehicle, in which six sit comfortably, drawn by superb horses that flew.  The ride was exciting because of the steep slope, the countless turns, the cliffs and ravines that flanked the way, the rapidity of the trip would satisfy any thrill seeker.  And I was really, really satisfied.  Arrived at the hotel in Smith Creek and I called it, and the others continued on to San Jose.

Cosi fra poco sara inaugurato sopra la cima di un monte del Michigan il grande osservatorio dell’universita di Chicago, che avra un telescopio, anch’esso donato, piu grande di questo del monte Hamilton.  L’universita poi di Harvard visto che nelle sue vicinanze l’atmosfera non e proppizia, ha fondato un osservatorio sulla cordigliera delle Ande (Peru) e ne fondera presto un altro sulle alte cime delle montagne dell’Arizona.  Come vedi, di gente dedita all’astronomia non manca l’America.

Un po’conversando e un po’osservando ho fatto venire le nove di sera mis apparecchiavo a far la strada a piedi fino allo Smith Creek, ove avevo intenzione di passar la notte.  La luna era stupenda ma undici chilometri eran un po’lunghetti, specialmente che non stimavo prudente a quell’ora di prendere scorciatoie.  Accettai percio con entusiasmo, che procurai pero di non mostrare troppo chiaramente, un’offro gentile ed insistente di un posto nella carrozza della comitiva presentatami dal professor Holden.

Soon University of Chicago’s big observatory will be opened on the top of a mountain in Michigan, which will have a telescope, also donated, bigger than the one here on Mount Hamilton.  Then Harvard University realized that in its vicinity the atmosphere wasn’t appropriate and founded an observatory in the Andes mountains in Peru, and soon another will open in the high mountains of Arizona.  So you can see, the people dedicated to astronomy here don’t let America down.

A little talking and a little observing I made my way at nine in the evening and walked as far as Smith Creek, where I had the intention of spending the night.  The moon was stupendous but eleven kilometers was a little long, especially since it didn’t seem prudent to take shortcuts at that hour.  So I enthusiastically accepted, [which procured but didn’t show too clearly?] a polite but insistent offer of a seat in the carriage with the group I met with Professor Holden.

Domandai al prof. Holden se non sentivano qualche volta la lontananza dalla vita sociale a cui sono condannate lassu.  Mi disse di no, prima di tutto perche sono parecchi (7 o 8) e molti con famiglia, e poi perche le loro occupazioni non dan loro tempo di annoiarsi.

Mi fecero vedere bellissime fotografie di pianeti e mi dissero che, dopo l’adattamento al gran telescopio del riproduttore fotografico molti osservatorii minor anche europei hanno trovato piu conveniente studiare gli astri su queste fotografie che non direttamente sui loro telescopi meno perfetti.

Anche nello studio delle scienze pure gli americani sono piu practici di noi.  Essi gli osservatorii astronomici li pongono sulle cime die monti ove atmosfera e limpida e pura, mentre da noi fondano nella nebbia e nella fuliggine delle grandi cita.

I asked prof. Holden if he didn’t occasionally feel the distance from social life to which they are sentenced up here.  He told me no, first of all because there are a few people up here (7 or 8) and many of them have families, and because their occupation doesn’t give them time to get bored.

He showed me some beautiful photographs of the planets and told me that after adapting the large telescope to reproduce the pictures many small observatories including in Europe have found it more convenient to study the stars from these photographs rather than directly from their own less perfect telescopes.

Even in the study of pure science the Americans are more practical than we are.  Take the astronomical observatories.  They put them on the tops of mountains where the air is clean and pure, while we rely on the fog and soot of the big cities.

Tutto il pavimento del gran padiglione ove il telescopio e posto puo esser innalzato o abbassato ed anche il soffitto semisferico e mobile e puo rotare su rulli, in modo da lasciare sempre aperta innanzi alla bocca del gigante una gran fessura per cui passa la luce.

Io osservai la Luna o meglio un a piccola parte di essa e potei vedere i famosi crateri dal color bianco argento.  Con un altro telescopio piu piccolo potei osservare Giove e i suoi quattro satelliti.  L’utilita di tali osservazioni e molto relativa, ma come scusa per un gradevole passeggiata puo passare.

Mentre stavo osservando Giove un giovane astronomo riconobbe in me uno dei suoi compagni di viaggio a bordo dell’Umbria e cosi mi fu dato di trovare persone di conoscenza anche immerso nel mondo interpanetario.

In the grand hall that holds the telescope, entire floor can be raised or lowered and the domed ceiling moves and rotates on rollers in a way that is always open enough that at the mouth there is a large slot that lets light pass through.

I observed the Moon, or better said, a small part of it and I could see the famous craters the color of white and silver.  With another smaller telescope I could see Jupiter and its four satellites.  The utility of these observations is relatively small, but as an excuse for a pleasant walk, they pass.

While I was observing Jupiter a young astronomer recognized me as one of his group from a trip abroad to Umbria and so there I found myself with people I know even immersed in the interplanetary world.

All’osservatorio mi accolsero gentilmente.  Avevo una lettera di raccomandazione per il direttore prof. Holden, con cui mi trattenni alquanto e da cui fu presentato ad una comitiva di tre signore ed un cavaliere assai gentili, che eran venuti su in carrozza.  Parlammo delle stelle e dei pianeti e poscia andammo nell’edifizio del gran cannocchiale.  Questo strumento e lungo per meno venti (?) metri e forse piu ed il suo obbiettivo ha un diametro di 96 centimetri.  Malgrado il suo enorme peso (5 tonnellate) si puo maneggiare come si vuole con una mano sola.  Merce un congengo meccanico assai ingegnoso esso puo seguire automaticamente il movimento apparente delle stelle cosicche, una volta puntato, l’astronomo non ha piu bisogno di muoverlo.

At the observatory, I was kindly received.  I had a letter of recommendation from the Director professor Holden with whom I was connected somewhat, and by which I was presented to a group of ladies and an officer who was nice enough, all of whom came by carriage.  We talked about the stars and planets and afterwards we went to see the large telescope in the office.  This instrument is enormous and long, at least twenty meters and maybe more and the objective lense has a diameter of 96 centimeters.  Despite its enormous weight (5 tons), you can move it however you want with one hand.   Thanks to an ingenious mechanic, it can automatically follow the movement of the stars so that when focused, the astronomer has no more need to move it.

La vista di lassu e stupenda e si stende assai sui monti e sulle valli circonvicine final al mare, che si vede da lontano quasi come nebbia.  Non ebbi ad admirare molto la flora che, stante la stagione, non si mostra in tutto il suo splendore.  Cominciavan ora soltanto a fiorire i gialli papaveri propri della California ed a germogliare i bei cespugli della rossa manzanita.  Piu notevole la fauna, rappresentata largamente da aquile, avvoltoi, tucani e da una quantita enorme di scoiattoli che sbucavan da ogni parte e correvan a rimpiattarsi nei loro buchi.  Tirai una revolverata ad un avvoltoio che mi si era avvicinato, ma riescii soltanto a farlo fuggire.

The view up there is stupendous and extends across mountains and valleys round about to the sea which you can see far off in the distance like fog.  I didn’t have much to admire in the  flowers that , given the season don’t show themselves in all their splendor.  The only flowers blooming now are the California poppies and the red manzanita bushes are sprouting.  More remarkable is the fauna, represented by eagles, vultures, toucans and a huge amount of squirrels who hide everywhere and run along into their holes.  At a certain point, I pulled out my revolver at a vulture who was approaching me, but I only succeeded in helping him flee.

Lasciai la mia bicicletta all’albergo, sapendo che la salita per la strada carrozzabile sarebbe stata troppo forte pel mio cavallo e che avrei potuto abbreviare di molto gli undici chilometri di strada col prendere un sentiero quasi rettilineo che adduce all’osservatorio.  Cosi feci ed arrivai verso le cinque all’osservatorio.  

I left my bicycle at the hotel, knowing that the climb by way of the road for the carriages would be too steep for my horse e that I should have been able to shorten the eleven kilometers by quite a bit by taking a path straight to the observatory.  This is the way I went and I arrived around five at the observatory.
