Eppure bisogna pensare che molte citta che ora spendon millioni di dollari per fondare universita e biblioteche e parchi e palazzi sono incominciate in queste maniera. Ma torniamo al nostro pacifico forte Snelling o meglio partiamo da esso dopo esserci imbarcati nel nostro piccolo trabiccolo.

Yet we must remember that many cities which now spend millions of dollars to build universities, libraries, parks and palaces started this way. But back to our peaceful Fort Snelling, or better yet, let’s start after we boarded our little contraption.

Per ogni lotto vi eran due o tre piu aspiranti. A quello che dicon i giornali fu una lotta terribile. Alcuni avevan pensato di far saltare i ponti delle ferrovie dell’Arkansas perche altri non potesser arrivar in tempo, ma non ci riuscirono. Ogni sorta di veicoli furan usati e la strada fu seminata di uomini e cavalli morenti, alcuni ucisi dai disagi, altri dai primi arrivati. Dopo fu una lotta febbrile per mantenere gli appezzamenti contro quelli che venivan dopo, ed un affannarsi ad erigere delle capanne che forse fra dieci anni saranno sostituite da buildings di venti piani. E poi il paese non offre per ora risorse e l’acqua si paga cinque dollari i bariletto.

For each lot there are two or three hopefuls. From what the newspapers say, there was a terrible struggle. Some had planned to blow up railway bridges, because no other power had arrived, but they failed. All sorts of vehicles were used and the street was full of dying men and horses, [some died by (discomforts?) and others from their first arrival.] After the terrible struggle, to prevent plots against them, they scramble to erect huts that maybe ten years later will be replaced by twenty story buildings. And then the country does not provide resources and so you end up paying five dollars per barrel of water.

La vidi un ponte a due arcate sul Mississippi che e qualche cosa di splendido si dal punto di vista tecnico dal punto di vista estetico.

Poi si viro di bordo e si venne alla deriva fino a Fort Snelling. La andai a terra a visitare questo forte che e anche attualmente tenuto dal soldati, ma che di forte non ha che il nome e quattro cannoni che fanno bella mostra di se a quattro angoli d’una piazza. Una volta era un posto avanzato e serviva a proteggere Minneapolis e St. Paul contro le scorrerie degli indiani. Ora naturalmente gli indiani sono si puo dire scomparsi e per trovarne qualcuno bisogna andare alle Indian Reservations che sono territori che il governo degli U.S. ha lasciato qua e la a questa razza destinata a scomparire. Anche in queste reservations in cui nessun bianco puo andare ad abitare vanno facendosi meno numerose. Anche pochi giorni fa, il governo lascio libera un a reservation vicino a Perry nell’Arkansas. Siccome quando cio avviene quelli che arrivano primi hanno il diritto di tenersi la terra che occupano, fu un accorrere affannoso di migliaia e migliaia di gente per impossessarsi delle terre.

There I saw a bridge with two arches across the Mississippi that was a splendid sight to see from a technical point of view and from an aesthetic point of view too [need confirmation that “si” in this case means also...if so, this is a rare aesthetic complement toward American architecture!].

Then we turned and we drifted toward Fort Snelling. There we went on land to visit that fort that actually also has soldiers, but the truth is the place doesn’t have as strong a name as the four cannons that sit on the corners of the square. There was a time when this was an advanced post that served to protect Minneapolis and St. Paul from Indian raids. Now, of course, you could say the Indians are basically gone, to find one you need to go to an Indian Reservation, which are territories that the American government left for them, and there this race is destined to disappear. And these reservations, in which no white person can go and live, are becoming less and less numerous. Also, a few days ago the government let free a reservation near Perry Arkansas. Since what happens is that whoever arrives first has the right to hold the land, there was a rush of thousands and thousands of people to take over the land.

Intanto avevo osservato un piccolo vaporino che si dirigeva appunto la dove ero io e che poco dopo infatti venne a toccar terra in una insenatura sotto la collina della “soldier home”. Domandai dove era diretto. Mi risposero che andavano a St. Paul, ma che facevan un giro un po’ vizioso poiche dovevan andare tre miglia piu in su, poi tornare indietro, fermarsi due ore a Fort Snelling e finalmente verso le 5 ½ partire definitivamente per St. Paul. Siccome non avevo furia ed avevo spedito gia i bagagli a St. Paul, ho pensato di montare sul battello e di lasciarmi guidare in tutte le sue peregrinazioni, e non me ne trovai male davvero perche i paesaggio e stato sempre bello e svariato. Ci si spinse prima a nord fino a Groveland Park, una specie di bosco ove i minneapolitani vengon far le loro merende.

Then I saw a small steamer that was directed where I was and, in fact, it touched down shortly after in a creek below the “soldier home” in the hill. I asked where it went right away. The replied that they did a little tour in which they went three miles more or less, then they turned around, stopping two hours at Fort Snelling, and then at around 5:30 they would leave for St. Paul. Since I didn’t have (furia--rage?), and I had sent all our luggage to St. Paul, I thought to take the boat and let myself be guided in all its wanterings, and I didn’t find it bad at all because the strip was beautiful and varied (interesting?). We first went north, as far as Groveland Park, a kind of forest where the people from Minneapolis go to take their picnics.

Attratto dalla bellezza dei luoghi m incamminai per un sentiero a lato del Minnehaha e dopo un’oretta di cammino arrivai ad un gran fiume. Era il Mississippi con le sue rive montuose e verdeggianti e le sue isolette graziosissime. Costeggiai alquanto questo fiume finche giunsi ad un luogo abitato. Era la “soldier home” un aggruppanmento di otto o dieci case eleganti assai che servon di abitazione ad un duecento veterani della guerra di secessione. Per dir la verita questi signori hanno fatto come i monaci. Si sono scelti una spendida collina una vista incantevole e la passan i loro giorni godendo intieramente le gioie della vita contemplativa....Parlai con alcuni di questi vecchioni che furon assai gentili e mi diedero la loro paterna benedizione “God blesse you” (spelling mistake in original) mi dissero quando mi congedai da loro. Altrettanto, gli riposi io e buona notte.

Attracted by the beauty of the place, I walked along a path along the edge of the Minnehaha and after an hour of walking I arrived at a wide river. It was the Mississippi with its huge, verdant banks and its delightful little islands. I walked along the river until I came to a place where people lived. It was a “soldier home,” a group of eight or ten very elegant houses that serve as a home for about two hundred veterans of the Civil War. I’m telling the truth, these veterans serve as monks. They have chosen a splendid hilltop with enchanting views and they pass their day entirely enjoying the pleasures of the contemplative life. I spoke with some of these elders (old guys?) who were very kind and gave me their paternal blessing “God bless you” when I took leave of them. Same to you and good night, I replied.

St. Paul 22 Sept 1893

Carissima Carlo,
Dunque ho cambiato completamente itinerario. Mi rincresceva lasciare l’America senza averla vista un po’bene e dopo molto studiare ristudiare ho preso una subitanea deciscione: Vado in California. Pero mi fermero prima in varia citta sul cammino e scrivero a te ad Emmmo o a mamma qualcosa di ognuna di esse.

Intanto ho lasciato Minneapolis ed il viaggo tra Minneapolis e St. Paul stato splendido. Ieri mattina andai alla stazione e spedii i bagagli e poscia, siccome il treno non partiva che due ore dopo presi un tram (elettrico s’intende perche non ve ne sono piu di tram a cavalli a Minneosta) e andai a vedere le cascatelle del Minehana che sono graziosissime e contronate da un bel parco che costeggia questo torrente.

Dearest Carlo,
Well, I’ve changed my itinerary completely. I think I’d be sorry if I left America without seeing it well and after studying and re-studying I came to a last minute decision: I’m going to California. However, I’ll stop in a few cities along the way and I’ll write to you and Emma or mamma a little bit of everything I see.

Meanwhile, I’ve left Minneapolis and the trip between Minneapolis and St. Paul was splendid. Yesterday morning I went to the station and checked my bags since the train didn’t leave for two hours after I took the tram (an electrical tram, because there are no longer trams pulled by horses in Minnesota) and went to see Minehana Cascades which are delightful and surrounded by a beautiful park along a creek.

I'm excited to be publishing this post, because this letter was long and finishing it feels like a great milestone for me (I've been working on this particular letter since 11/29/2011). In the next letter Camillo will announce his change in plans. He does not head home as he originally intended, he decides to go west. California here we come!

Sono stato pure a fare una passeggiata in tram elettrico fino al lago. Henriette, un bellissimo bacino non molto grande, ma assai pittoresco. Domani abbandonero Minneapolis e andro a St. Paul, citta gemella di Minneapolis e poco distante da questa. A St. Paul conto di prendere un battello e arrivare per acqua (sul Mississippi) in 4 giorni a St. Louis (Missouri). Ora ti lascio non senza averti detto che a Chicago non ho piu ricevuto ne lettere tue ne Emma ne di Carlo e chel le tre lettere che ho ricevute cola eran molto incomplete e non dicevan nulla e si vedevan scritte proprio perche non potevi far a meno. Spero a Quebec (canada) di riceverne di piu interessanti. Ricordati di chiamare Giannotti e di dirgli nel modo piu esplicito che volgio che quel piantamento in Chiusura si faccia ad ogni costo.

Vorrei scrivere due righe allo zio ma ora non posso. Tu fammi il piacere di leggergli questa lettera e di dirgli tante belle cose da parte mia. Naturalmente questa lettera servira anche a dare mi notizie ad Emma ed a Carlo ed ai bimbi. Ho ricevuto una cartolina di Piero. Rigrazialo e digli che mi scriva ancora piu lungo. Saluti alle signore Riva, Carenzi, Gozo, Realis, Demaria, Rossi, etc. Mi rincresce che per venti giorni almeno non recevero piu vostre notizie. Ricordami ad Epifania e Tommasin.

I also took a trip on an electric tram out to the lake. Henriette is a beautiful pond, not too big but very picturesque. Tomorrow I leave Minneapolis and will go to St. Paul, the twin city to Minneapolis that is not too far from here. To get to St. Paul, I’ll go by water (on the Mississippi) and it will take four days to get to St. Louis (Missouri).

Now I’ll sign off, but not without having said that in Chicago I didn’t receive your letter, nor the one from Emma, nor the one from Carlo, and that the three letters that I did receive were very incomplete and didn’t say anything and I hope you can see it to really write a letter, that’s the least you could do. I hope that in Quebec I’ll receive some letters that are a little more interesting. Remember to call Gianotti and tell him that I plan to build a plant in Chisura at any cost [could someone confirm that this is an accurate translation].

I’d like to write two lines to uncle but I’m not able to right now. Give him my greetings, read him this letter, and send him all my love. Naturally, this letter is also intended for reporting my news to Emma, Carlo and the kids. I received a postcard from Piero. Please thank him for me and tell him to write me again, but a little longer next time. Send my regards to the Rivas, Carenzis, Gozos, Realises, the Demarias, the Rossis, etc.

Quando una segheria abbisogna di legname essa manda un a nota di quanto le occorre e gli agenti della compagnia mandano per mezzo sempre della corrente, ma dirigendoli con dighe, i tronchi alla segheria tenendo nota del numero, della qualita, e del nome del proprietario che viene poi da essa compagnia pagato. I tronchi vengon poi da una catena continua estratti dall’aqua e condotti alle macchine che li riducon in pochi minuti allo strato di assi e legni da costruzione.

When a sawmill needs wood, they send a note requesting what they need, and then the agent sends more current and directs the trunks to the sawmill by using dams. They make note of the number, the quality, the name of the owner and how much was paid. The trunks arrive on a continuous stream of current are conducted to the machines where they are reduced to straight planks of wood for construction in minutes.

Stamani poi andai a visitare dei mulini (largest in the world) e alcuni impianti elettrici e delle segherie. Quest’ultime sono sovratutto interesanti, e degne d’esser viste. Come del resto la maggior parte degli United States, la vallanta superiore del Mississippi e ricchissima di legnamei; tronchi vegnon tagliati e poscia contrassegnati con una marca speciale a ciascun proprietario e poi vegnon immersi nel Mississippi e lasciati trasportare del corrente. Una volta che sono immersi nell’aqua il proprietario non ci pensa piu, perche essi vegnon posti sotto la protezione di una compagnia i cui agenti non solo guardano acciocche non sien derubati o dispersi, ma anche li selezionano secondo le dimensioni e le qualita.

This morning I went and visited some mills (the largest in the world) and some electrical plants and a few saw mills. The saw mills were the most interesting and worth seeing. Like most of the rest of the United States the Mississippi and upper Vallanta are rich with timber; the trunks are cut and marked with a special brand for each company and then are immerssed in the Mississippi for the current to transport them. Once they’ve been cut, the proprietor doesn’t worry about them anymore because they are placed under the protection of a company whose officers not only look after them, but select them for size and quality.

Dopo l’intervista sono andato a trovare un ingegnere per cui avevo una lettere di raccomandazione della Societa degli ingegneri di Chicago. Egli me fece vedere un’esposizionella regionale che si tiene ogni anno a Minneapolis e mi diede bigliette onde visitare alcune fabbriche. Alla sera andai a teatro. Vi era un dramma a forti tinte con ipnostism e uccisioni e testamenti e dito di dio ed esaltazione dell’innocente e punizione del colpevole ed altre mille belle cose da arena. Per me pero fece piu impressione il pubblico che lo spettacolo, questo pubblico infantile che si commuove e si immedesima in un dramma impossibile che applaude le buone azioni e disaprova le contrarie nella maniera piu buffa del mondo.

After the interview I went to find an engineer for whom I had a letter of recommendation from the Chicago Engineers Society. He took me to see a small regional exposition that they have every year in Minneapolis and he gave me tickets to see a few factories. In the evening I went to the theatre. There was a drama with intense colors hypnotism and killing and wills, the hand of god, exaltation of the innocent, punishment of the guilty and a thousand other beautiful things in the arena. For me, however, the audience made a bigger impression than the show, this childish audience that is so moved and so identified with an impossible drama that they cheer for the “good guys” and boo for the “bad guys” was the funniest thing I’ve seen in the world.

E vero che a Chicago se non fosse stato per Ferraris mi sarei potuto alloggiare molto meglio e piu buon mercato in qualche famiglia, come avevo avuto intenzione prima di sapere che il prof. Ferraris sarebbe venuto con me. Credo che senza di lui io avrei risparmiato molto tempo e non meno di cinquantina di dollari. Appena arrivato all’hotel sono stato intervistato da un reporter della “Minneapolis Tribune” che e il giornale piu importante di qui. Proprio cosi! Intervistato come sarebbe potuto capitare ad un Crispi pagava con quello degli altri mentre io avrei dovuto pagare del mio. Naturalmente l’intervisatore ha cambiato abbastanza le idee che io ho espresso, ma poco male. Ho comprato il giornale e te lo mando e dall’ispezione di esso potrai vedere che ho parlato un po’di tutto, del papa, della triplice, dell, emigrazione etc, etc.

It’s true that in Chicago, if I hadn’t been with Ferraris, I could have put myself up in better places and more cheaply with a family, like I intended to do before I knoew Prof. Ferraris would be coming with me. I think I would have stayed longer and for no less than fifty dollars. As soon as I arrived at the hotel I was interviewed by a reporter from the Minneapolis Tribune, the most important paper here. Just like that! He interviewed me like as if I were a paid Crispi (??) while I should have paid for mine [?] Naturally, the interview changed a lot of what I expressed, but not too badly. I bought the newspaper and I’ll send it for you to inspect so you can see that I talked about a little bit of everything, about papa, the triple, immigration, etc.
